I remember my very first days with Flash. It was so exciting and overwhelming when first realizing how much you can do with Flash. Now I'm sitting with my colleague Dru and good friend Larry from Nemo and it feels like those times are on us again. We're practically giddy playing in the IDE. There are loads of new features and everything feels really polished. Expect to see many posts as we explore the new creative possibilities of Flash and, if you're by any chance in San Francisco, do stop by Adobe and register for your own licensed copy of Flash CS4.

Adobe Dreamweaver CS3: available for both Mac and Windows operating systems. Recent versions have incorporated support for web technologies such as CSS, JavaScript, and various server-side scripting languages and frameworks including ASP.NET, ColdFusion, JavaServer Pages, and PHP.

As a WYSIWYG Presto-based editor, Dreamweaver can hide the details of pages’ HTML code from the user, making it possible for non-coders to create web pages and sites. A professional criticism of this approach is that it produces HTML pages whose file size and amount of HTML code is much larger than they should be, which can cause web browsers to perform poorly. This can be particularly true because the application makes it very easy to create table-based layouts. In addition, some web site developers have criticized Dreamweaver in the past for producing code that often does not comply with W3C standards, though this has improved considerably in recent versions. Dreamweaver 8.0 (the version prior to the recently released 9.0 within CS3) performed poorly on the Acid2 Test, developed by the Web Standards Project. However, Macromedia has increased the support for CSS and other ways to lay out a page without tables in later versions of the application, with the ability to convert tables to layers and vice versa. Dreamweaver allows users to preview websites in many browsers, provided that they are installed on their computer. It also has some site management tools, such as the ability to find and replace lines of text or code by whatever parameters specified across the entire site, and a templatization feature for creating multiple pages with similar structures. The behaviors panel also enables use of basic JavaScript without any coding knowledge.

A quick test with the new Adobe Camera RAW compared to the JPEG file shot with the standard setting in the Canon 50D reveals what I hoped...the camera is way better than I first thought with my initial tests....thanks Adobe for picking up where Canon dropped the ball on software.

Sample image grabbed using Skitch from Apple preview and Adobe Camera RAW dialog box.

I should point out that I have applied no noise reduction to the Camera RAW settings as I wanted it to be as 'out of the camera' as possible, where as the Canon in camera software does apply noise reduction which you can see by looking at the car door.

Canon in camera 50D with standard picture style (zoomed to fit)

Adobe Camera RAW 4.6 processing the RAW file from the Canon 50D (zoomed to fit)

I think the results speak for themselves, the RAW file feels much much sharper at 100% view than the JPEG ever did, finally I am happy with my 50D!

(continuar lendo)

This week I installed, setup and connected 45 computers. The first 10 were fun, the next 10 were annoying, the rest was just work.

Then we tested aggressively before we deployed to the whole office, and when we felt we had a stable installed, we went for it. Turns out it wasn't so smooth.

After a couple 12+ hour days the problem turns out to be a third party plugin for indesign CS3! The problem is we have to have this certian plugin to function. So we've had some hard days this week.

Luckily we seem to be keeping our heads above water until we can get an update for our Plugin

So yesterday we saw an awesome presentation by the insanely clever Francisco from 280north (who's managed to contribute to MobileSafari, Google Maps for the iPhone and created Objective-J since graduating form USC two years ago... shees that's some productivity). He showcased their 280slides product, which is essentially Apple Keynote ported to the web.

Sure... it doesn't really come close to all the functionality that "regular Keynote" has, but despite this 280slides is hands down one of the more impressive engineering efforts I've seen in quite some time... but what does it give me as a user? So far, the only reasons for me to switch is that it's free and that it's available when I don't have my computer with me. Is this really enough?

And what about Photoshop.com? Just like 280slides, it's an extremely well polished product and just like 280slides, it's very clear why I would accept the massively scaled down feature set and speed, and switch to Express from using regular Photoshop, besides price and availability. So maybe they're both targeting non-consumption, a classic low end disruption? I mean, price and availability are naturally extremely important.

First of all, the "free" aspect is most probably temporary... also last time I checked Photoshop CS still outsells Photoshop Elements, right? Second, the availability is just physical, as in it allows you to create presentations on different computers. That's fine, but I hardly think that it's enough for this kind of app, unless it leverages some sort of networked functionality. Gmail, Basecamp etc. aren't relevant to compare with.

However, I think that easing the access in the virtual world might be an interesting scheme. At least for Photoshop Express. I mean, wouldn't it be great if I could edit my pictures in the same, rich interface when I upload pictures to Flickr, Wordpress, Facebook etc. Why aren't Adobe leveraging this distribution dimension? Most CMS-platform would love to have more rich interface to handle images, specially if they didn't need to develop it themselves. They could just wrap Photoshop Express around the uploaded picture. And Adobe could charge a fixed or usage based license fee.

That would be something. Wouldn't it?

In our test environment we have found some crashing issues on the viewer side on some of the PCs. It is not the case with all the computers and it's inconsistent. I guess luck plays a part here :)

After playing viewer for long duration it crashes showing an error message that points to flash9f.ocx flash plug in. This is because of the compatibility mismatch between the flash plug in and the the browser you are using it with.

This is how the error details for Internet Explorer 6 looks like

[caption id="attachment_269" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Flash9f.ocx crashing error details with IE6"][/caption]

After searching on various forums one of the common possibilities for this error seems to be the upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 from Internet Explorer 6 OR vice-verse. User upgrades from IE6 (which already has flash plug in installed) to IE7. This could have corrupt the flash plug in in registry values.

We have not faced any such issues in Firefox. The immediate workaround would be to switch to Firefox for playing the locations. Please install the the Firefox full screen plug in to play the location in full screen mode in Firefox.

If Internet Explorer is the priority, below are some links to the forums which may help you. They talk about a clean installation of flash plugin.

How to E-Mail Postage with USPS Dazzle / Endicia

There comes a time for every customer service department when a customer refuses to pay the return p

There comes a time for every customer service department when a customer refuses to pay the return postage, even if it's their fault! Unfortunately, this can cost you money but to save a negative feedback or the hassle of having them call and bother your crew can often times be well worth the $5.00 to have them ship it back. Likewise, the customer is more likely to send the item off right away instead of waiting at his conveyance to wait in line at the post office. Everyday that passes, the customer might still be e-mailing you threats or silly e-mails.

You will need an Endicia account and have their Dazzle software installed. Dazzle with Endicia does not necessary explain in layman's terms how to email postage and it's defiantly not an automated task with that works with your other software applications but it is possible. One reason USPS doesn't really want you doing this is because the shipping post office is graded on a scale of 100 the on-time percentage of delivery for parcels and upgraded options. You might send someone a label via E-Mail on Monday, but your customer might not send it till Friday, causing the Post Master to feel a small deduction in his percentage if the process is repeated over and over.

Anyways, it's pretty easy to do.

Step 1: You will need to download adobe reader and install the full version. You also need Dazzle from Endicia installed as stated above. This version doesn't cost you a dime but might take in upwards of 10 minutes to download and install. Restart your PC. Doing so will allow your computer to set adobe as a valid "printer" when you go to print postage and is necessary in the below steps.

Step 2: After you've installed, open up Endicia Dazzle software and the layout that you wish to send return postage etc with.

Step 3: Fill out the address and return address accordingly. Usually I type our company name in both the return address section and the mailing address section. We can usually be accurate with the weight, but if it's not, USPS might return it to the return address and the postage is wasted and still needs to be sent out. When you put your address in both of these fields, if for some reason something goes wrong, USPS has no option but to "return to sender" and it will eventually make it back to your facility/home.

(When you double click on the senders address a menu comes up. Here you highlight the entire address, press CTR-C and it will auto populate the shipping address. USPS has no option but to send it back to you even if the party you're emailing over packs for the next earthquake)

Step 4: When you have the label, weight (adjusted by double clicking on the postage section on the label) and method, you're ready to export to PDF file so you can email the file. You will need to set up the postage to print to PDF Adobe Reader. Click on FILE>Printer Setup> and change the default from your thermal/laser/inkjet printer to AdobePDF Creator. Select this option in printer drop down menu and click ok.

Step 5: Time to "print". Click on the print Icon in the upper left of the application and it should open adobe, create the file automatically and then (for me at least) opens up Outlook with the file already attached. I enter in the customers email and a quick message and you're done! EASY!

Remember to remind them to send it out ASAP so you don't get a call from your Post Master or it gets delayed. Faxing labels doesn't work because it throws the bar code off and 3D scan postage at the top off and cant be used by USPS. Very rarely, faxing a copy might make it's way to the lost and found never to be seen again. Also remember to change your layout back to your default!

Adobe Flash Player 9 not running or installation problem solved, fixed!
Trubleshoting. This is How to fix the problem with flash player not running or not installing:

Big Problem! Sometimes, on youtube you get the message:
Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player. Click here to get the latest flash player
You do, but you could not install. Or you just can't see flash movies or the installation at Adobe site, when the page get not finished. Or missing flash files or flash movies.
This is most common with windows SP2, IE7 and the update Adobe Flash player 9 but it happens on Vista especially with UAP turned on.
:!: Just in case: I assumed you have java enabled, if not, check in IE:
Tools - Internet Options - Advanced -
then scroll through you find: Java, the box below it should be checked.
:!: Another thing to check, if you have spybot search and destroy, this tool has a flash killer setting. Please, verify this to be NOT checked.

So let's see what can we do to fix it.
1. First download the Adobe flash uninstaller tool from here:

Then, download the stand alone full instaler for Flash Player here:
http://www.macromedia.com/go/full_flashplayer_win_ie

2. Then, run the uninstaller tool but run as administrator:
Right click on, and chose: Run as... Administrator
For Vista users must have administrative rights or chose Run Elevated
3. Reboot
4. Run the stand alone instaler tool, as above, right click, "Run as... administrator" for XP or "Run Elevated" for Vista.
5. Reboot.
6. You are Done! :D

Important: If you have download the .msi Microsoft Installer package for Adobe Flash Player, not the simple one from the link above, this file, the installer, might be blocked. For avoid problems with installation, before you run it, right click on the installer, select Properties and on the General tab, at bottom, near Security you will see a button: Unblock. You must press that button and unblock that file before run the msi installer.

If Adobe Flash Player not work after the steps above you can still do this:
For Win XP and Vista
1. Open My Computer.

FUTURE TRENDS AHEAD

The purpose of this post is to give a general foresee of the future of web app

FUTURE TRENDS AHEAD

The purpose of this post is to give a general foresee of the future of web apps development. From the comparison between desktop apps and web apps, we can conclude that in the near future, one of the priorities of web apps development is to provide user as rich functions and features as desktop apps do, meanwhile, for the characteristics that are not so well for current web apps, such as the stability, security, sustainability, these are to be improved. In this chapter, some of the latest technologies are introduced to give us an overview what is going on there. These include RIA using Microsoft SilverLight for illustration; and Mashups with Google Maps Mashup as an example; and Adobe Air together with Gear from Google representing the trend of combination of desktop and web applications. Lastly, a very brief introduction is given for cloud computing technology.

From what have been discussed above, we can conclude that the future of web application development is to integrate the usability, flexibility of desktop applications and the transport and ease-to-access capabilities of web applications, and meantime enhance the security, scalability and interactivity of web applications.

As is discussed before, one limitation to current web application is that it cannot provide as rich user experience as desktop applications due to certain constraints such as the working environment, as now web applications are still restricted to web browsers, which, compared to operating systems, is much simpler in functionality and supporting. Other constraints may be in programming language, as JavaScript is still the main scripting language for creating web applications; the power of the language will decide the functionality of web apps; network availability, accessibility, etc might become constraints, too.

In order to equip web apps with as rich the functionality and features as desktop apps, developers are working on Rich Internet Applications (RIA), which tries to realize that by transferring the processing necessary to the interface to web client while keep bulk of data at the application server, this differs from the usual way of doing all the processing at the server [1], and it is believed that in this way the user interface and responsiveness of web apps will be improved.

One example of RIA is SilverLight technology proposed by Microsoft, which Microsoft promises aims to deliver identical user experience both within browser and on desktop, based on the fact that it has “rich controls, rich networking support and rich base class library” [1] .

Another trend is to create web apps that combine various web services from different suppliers; this is called Mash up, which is a hybrid of web applications. The main functions of the apps are realized by calling external web services and then do processing on the result returned by the web services.

The most commonly seen example is RSS (Really Simple Syndication) reader, like Google Reader, through which we subscribe news on web pages; but now we have a lot more, like video and photo mashups, searching and shopping mashups, etc. For example, in Microsoft Popfly, people can easily create a web application that retrieves specified pictures from Flickr, or Google Picasa, and then display them as a slideshow or post them to your own page like Facebook; or you can grab portion of Google Maps, for example, your location map, placed it onto your own application window, either a webpage or desktop application.

An even hotter trend might be seen is the combination of desktop applications and web applications, like what Gears from Google or Adobe AIR does. They overcome the limits of web browsers by deploying rich internet applications onto desktop directly. This actually blurs the differences between desktop and web apps. Both Gears and Adobe Air applications can work offline, doing work such as data entry, and when an Internet connection is available, they will upload the data and do further processing. For example, AOL has released a desktop widget named “top100videos”, from which user can select to watch any video interested, and if network connectivity is available, the application will communicate with server and streaming the video.

Since 2007, there is much talking and debating [3] on a technology called “cloud computing”, supported by Google, IBM, Amazon and a number of universities, the cloud here is the metaphor of Internet and the main purpose is to reliance on the Internet for solving computing problems from clients. The key characteristics include great enhancement in security, scalability and reliability, meanwhile, the performance and sustainability is much improved.

The future of web application development is not easily predicted as Information Technology industry is so fast developing an area; yet we can still draw some conclusions based on the latest technologies introduced above. First, the developers will try to leverage the advantages of desktop applications and integrate them into web applications, such as the interface, rich functions, etc. To realize that, they need to break through some of the bottlenecks, one is the browser, another one is the programming language; second, various web services are to be integrated into web apps, and this requires good network support; finally, the scalability, security and sustainability of web apps are to be enhanced. This will be achieved with efforts from various parties, including network infrastructure improvement (to increase bandwidth), security tech development, next-generation data center development etc.

John Nack, the Photoshop product manager with a background in web design, has always (as long as he's been in office) pushed for more extensibility and custom configuration of the Photoshop interface.

As a result, in Photoshop CS4 we now have flash-based panels that can be built from scratch by third party developers.

But it gets better. Very soon now, you can 'roll your own' Panel in a snap with Adobe Configurator.

[caption id="attachment_133" align="alignleft" width="477" caption="Adobe Configurator"][/caption]

The application lets you pick and choose (literally drag and drop) among Photoshop tools, menu items, scripts and actions, and it even lets you include stuff like instructional videos, before it 'bakes' a new Panel that you can import into Photoshop CS4, and share with the world. Presto! All of your most used tools in one customized Panel. Pretty damn cool.
