I love to-do lists. Mostly because I love to cross things off my to-do lists. I have even been known to add things I have already done, so I can cross them off and see what I have accomplished. Imagine my surprise when I looked at my to-do list from the other day: laundry, post office, prepare for a meeting, ACM. Huh? ACM. Sure enough, it was right there on my list. I just stared at it. What in the hell is ACM? It was my handwriting so I knew what it was, once upon a time. And it made the list, so it's something I'm supposed to be doing... now I just have to figure out what it means.

Almost an entire day went by and I still had no clue. This is the type of thing that will make me completely crazy. I was able to concentrate on little else while trying to remember my own code. Hmmm, code. Code. That sounds a little familiar. I was writing in some sort of code. Now why would I do that?

AHAA! Anniversary Card Mike -- ACM. I wrote it in code so he wouldn't see that it was on my to-do list. (As if he would ever even look at one of my to-do lists.) And you guessed it, I didn't get the card in time. How could I? I had used such a clever code (dripping sarcasm here) that I foiled my own plans.

It could be noted that I had a very unproductive end of the week and actually didn't get ANYTHING done from my to-do list. But I did get some important things accomplished, like watching Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report and Countdown with Keith Olberman. I spent a lot of time reading mudflats.wordpress.com and the million comments each post inspired. But I digress...

Yesterday I added M&DAC to my list. My mom and dad's anniversary is tomorrow. Now that I know my own shorthand I figured I might as well use it. I got my husband's card today (two days late) and he liked it. My parents' card will go out tomorrow and probably get there a few days late as well. But since they read this, they will know that I haven't forgotten, it's just been an interesting few days.

Is religion a friend or a foe?

Is religion a friend or a foe?

Watching the movie Traitor this afternoon, I gained new insight into the value of religion, in this case Islam. While in a Yemeni prison, the protagonist gives a fellow inmate his rations after a bully had thrown the other man's rations onto the ground. The bully then confronts the protagonist, telling him "I decide who eats and who starves." The protagonist fights the bully and his gang alone and, though adept at combat, is overwhelmed. However, other inmates notice his good deed and his daily prayers. The next time the gang confronts the protagonist, the other Muslim inmates come to his aid, and he is left alone.

Libertarians often feel as if they are each a lone voice shouting against the chorus of human aggression. We teach our friends about right and wrong, property rights, and human dignity, but are often unable to affect great change.

We are also generally an atheist lot. Now, this wasn't always the case. The revolutionary generation were deists and freemasons. These 'brotherhoods' were a source of mutual support. Nowadays, there is a segment of the christian right which leans in a libertarian direction, and as Ron Paul's Rally for the Republic showed, they are more effective at organizing (even with a less consistent program).

Now, I don't support the neoconservative tenet that religion is a 'useful myth' that should be propagated to keep stupid people in line. And I don't see how the concept of God makes any sense. As an anthropomorphic creature, he would not be omnipotent; as an omnipotent being, he would not help answer any questions that he supposedly answers. However, I do believe there is utility in shared customs and brotherhood. I would probably join the freemasons if they didn't require members to profess faith in a supreme beings.

Instead, I move that we treat libertarianism like a religion - a social code. It is only by religious conviction that men have risen from expediency and committed to living righteously. Islam's success in the Arab world was due to the Koran's ready-made legal system and principles. Muslims knew other muslims would: use gold and silver for currency, keep their word on contracts, hold 100% reserves on deposits, fight for their property, respect the honor of their wives and daughters. That sounds pretty libertarian, doesn't it? Sharia law in practice is perhaps a perversion, a fascist overlay of subjugating women and serving the powerful interests. But like the American federation, people were drawn to Islam initially because of its offer of a system of justice that respects freedom and property. What libertarianism needs is a 'good book' like the Bible, meeting halls in every city, and people pledging their sacred honor to each other's defense.

With all that, I don't think anyone will even miss the God nonsense.

We (SVRT-Bkis) have just discovered vulnerability in Google Chrome 0.2.149.27. This is the first Chrome Vulnerability permiting hacker to perform a remote code execution attack and take complete control of the affected system.

We have submitted this Vulnerability to Google. They confirmed and assign a verifier for build 0.2.149.28. At this time, we recommend Chrome users do not access any untrusted website or use “Save As” function until the vunerability is fixed

well, i have been working on a simple maze game on the side and i am having some issue with generating a maze that is complex, but yet still has a path. currently, i am using a north/south/west/east method for each piece. this is where i assign a 1 or 0 to each direction that indicates how each piece works. for example, if you have a top-left corner piece, that would be 0, 1, 0, 1 in my array. this piece would then match up with any piece that has a 1 for the north or west directions. very simple way to determine pathing, but my problem lies in creating an intelligent route. currently i am employing a north/west approach to build the path. i check the row that has been already built (north) and the piece directly to the left of the piece i am working on (west). this ensures that a path will be created that connects. the complexity of the puzzle seems to naturally occur through this semi-random selection. my main problem is that sometimes the algorithim randomly cuts the path off and will not allow anyone to continue through the maze. i am still puzzled (pun anyone?) by this, but hope to have a simple browser version working soon. as i always say, we shall see...
