About Prima J

The name of their debut single may be “Rock Star,” but the two cousins that make up Prima J are everything but. In fact, Jessica and Janelle Martinez are so down-to-earth, it seems just as odd that their song is the lead track from the Bratz™ Motion Picture Soundtrack (released by Geffen Records July 31st, with the movie following August 3). Far from precocious and everything but bratty, the pair are actually a real-life version of the comradery and competitive edge captured in the movie.

Their recent discovery and success aside, Jessica and Janelle still can’t believe that they’ve not only signed a record deal and are currently finishing their debut album for release later this year, but are also appearing in what is expected to be one of the summer’s cinema hits and have recorded an infectious single destined to help make the soundtrack a smash. “None of this has hit either of us yet,” says Janelle, 18. “I feel like I’m dreaming and someone needs to wake me up. It’s one thing to record a song and a video, but it’s another thing to hear it on the radio or see it on TV. That’s where it’ll really hit me…”

Forgive the girls for not having teen-idol egos, but they’re just too happy and excited to be doing the same thing they’ve been doing for most of their lives—singing and dancing. “We just did the video for ‘Rock Star,’ and it was the greatest experience ever,” says Jessica, 19, with an excited laugh. “We love dancing, and we were dancing all day. It’s so great to get this opportunity to do it in front of a camera, and show people that we do belong here!”

Jessica and Janelle Martinez got their start as a duo when they were barely old enough to talk, performing choreographed cheerleading and dance routines for their family each week during halftime of Dallas Cowboys football games. With five uncles, two aunts, and at least three cousins with each, those family gatherings were large, which explains why the girls, then four, have no problem strutting their stuff in front of audiences now. Says Jessica, “We were always more into music than the rest of our family, and as we got older took every chance we’d get to perform, whether it was cheerleading, dancing, school plays, choir…”

“She did all of the clubs, student government, and had straight-A’s,” says Janelle with a grin. “I was more the class clown, tom-boy type. I like to get my nails and hair done, but at the same time, like to kick it with my guy friends and do sports… She’s the girly one that likes to be chill. I’m the bungee jumper and sky diver that likes roller coasters!” Together, they’re a high-energy pair of real-life girls next door that blend the energy of Janet Jackson and the spunk of Gwen Stefani with the urban pop of TLC and the hip-hip bop of trailblazing duo Salt-N-Pepa.

Living in Rosemead, CA, a predominantly Latin American suburb of Los Angeles, the girls were active in choreography and dancing when they were introduced to Stefanie Ridel, a former bandmate of Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson in the pop act Wild Orchid. Ridel took the pair under her creative wing, and quickly realized that while trios are a lot more common in pop music than duos, this was one pair that would survive just fine on their own.

“We’ve always stuck together, and we’ve always had that fire and known that we really wanted to do this,” says Jessica. “If one of us was good at something, the other was just as good, because we always did everything together.” “And, if one of us ever thought we couldn’t do something, we’ve always been there to support each other,” says Janelle. “We’re so close, we’re like sisters, we’re best friends and we’re never apart. This is just a dream come true.”

“Now that we’ve gotten this far, we’ve realized that it doesn’t matter if you’re the average, girl-next-door type,” says Jessica. “It doesn’t matter what you look like or where you’re from, you should never think that you can’t accomplish something.”

As Mexican-Americans, they hope to be role models to both American and Latin girls, as they consider themselves the face of the new Hispanic in America, part of an emerging generation that “speaks English and lives Latin.” They even go so far as to affectionately refer to each other as “chilosa,” a made-up word that they feel defines Prima-J: two sassy, classy, spicy and feisty girls. They may be the girls next door, but they’re also fun and fearless, with an independent spirit and deep sense of inner confidence.

“We want to have a good time, but we also want to send a message to younger people and be idols for American and the Latin community,” sums Janelle. “Too many people don’t know that if they set their mind to it, they can accomplish anything, just like we have.”

News Bites: DBSK's Nipples, U-Kiss and Stripping Kindergarten Teachers

There is a new boyband to debut in Japan named U-Kiss. Just from the name I laugh all over. I think it's a sign that I'm developing into adult when I find boybands named "U-Kiss" absurd. (Or is this a sign of my cynicism and growing callousness?) Anyway, I'm no longer interesting in boybands (but manbands, bring it on!) SHINee has already caused me enough stress, contemplation and moral caucuses. (But U-Kiss...Yeah... no thanks.) But I think 3 popular boys are being recycled into this group so some people are extremely excited.
Yoo Jae Suk got married, tons of celebs went. I didn't feel like doing a whole post after K-popped! and Popseoul! did theirs because I have nothing interesting to say (not that that's stopped me before). But congrats to Yoo Jae Suk and his bride. They'll be moving into his parents house after marriage. (This fact makes me happy that I don't live in a Confucius society. I don't even want to live with my mother after I graduate college, yet alone when I'm old enough to make the decision to spend the rest of my life with someone.) But Yoo Jae Suk is jumping for joy!
This video has been "generating buzz" (another overused phrase). It's a kindergarten teacher performing to the Wonder Girls' So Hot and taking off her clothes (she still wearing shorts and a tank by the end, don't worry). People are saying, "I can't believe a kindergarten teacher would do that!" But if you look closely or just pay attention you'll see that this video is staged. Especially the ending.
Shin Jung Hwan broke himself recently. Forehead, pelvis, knee and back are injured. Jung Hwan was riding his bike.
Shin Hye Sung, because of a serious knee injury in 2001, is exempt from military service. Lucky bastard. His fellow Shinhwa brothers are all enlisting this year.
Today is Kim Bum's birthday. He's nineteen in western years. As I'm not particularly familiar with the lunar calendar I'm not sure his age in Korea but I'm pretty sure it's twenty. Maybe now that he's older he'll get better roles and be less shy around women. He does seem to have an interesting role in a horror movie featuring Lee Beom Soo, recently seen in On Air, Nam Gyu Ri and Yoon Jung Hee. The movie is called Go-Sa. The thumbnail is from the press conference.
DBSK's T Tour was aired recently. I am not going to watch this concert, mostly because of the costumes (silver spandex and protruding nipples are unacceptable), and partially because I only loved 3 of the 21 songs on the T album. But there's lots of stuff around youtube. Including two of my favorite song performed one after the other. My comments on that: the more I watch them the more I think Yoochun usually can't sing. I mean, I know he can sing, but I rarely like his voice in a song. Yunho, because of the hair, is becomming the ahjumma fans that adore him so. Junsu is awesome as usual because he is. Changmin and Jaejoong are solid, Jaejoong, of course, continuing to be absurdly attractive. Oh, and is anyone else perturbed by the sheer number of shameless crotch shots? (This performance also made me wish they had less choreography but conveyor belts are awesome).

We sang to a packed house, we more or less stuck to our parts and the concert helped to raise $2,500 for Kidzpositive! I'd call that an outstanding success! Thanks to all who attended, helped, participated, gave money, heart, spirit - everything came together and made a little miracle.

Choir may be wrapped up for the summer but it is such a tremendous part of all our lives that it seems to creep in - like the blackberries. We see each other around, at the Village or the garden store, or the bank. We hum our songs as we garden, or drive, or walk. What gorgeous gifts we share with each other and how blessed we are to be able to share what we have with women and children in need in Africa.

Hello! Today I watched C-ute's concert called "Cutie Circuit 2008 ~Love Escalation~ and I must say, that after this concert I finaly rethought my attitude towards C-ute. They're great! Even though I didn't had a chance to watch the concert without any interruptions, but I have chores to do so I don't blame it... But I really liked that concert.

This is actually the first concert of C-ute that I watched. I'm already thinking about watching their earlier concerts, because I had a lot of fun.

Berryz Koubou 17th single ~Yuke Yuke Monkey Dance~ is already available at Hello!Online! This is really great! And also, the Berryz Koubou & °C-ute Nakayoshi Battle Concert Tour 2008 Haru ~Berryz Kamen vs. Cutie Ranger~ - with C-ute Tracks dvd has finally came to Hello!Online!!! I'm already waiting for it to download... I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS!!!!! IT'S GREAT!!!! Um... sorry for my emotions it's just that I've waited for this way too long...

There's also some more information on C-ute 6th single ~Edo no Temari Uta II~ which, as you already know, will be released on 30th of July. Nouciel from JPH!P forum has pointed out some pictures of the costumes used in Music Japan event. I will put them here for your conveniece.

Another trip to Deer Island complete! What a nice little weekend! We were the only people at the island this weekend, and it was nice, different for a change. I was finished work at the pool at 7pm on Friday, so after that I headed down to the wharf to meet up with Mom and Dad, who had everything all paked in the boat and were just sitting there waiting for me. :) Then off we went! There was a bit of a swell in the water when we headed over, so it was a good thing there was no wind. It was still a beautiful evening.

Because of the nice evening, which we seldom see around here this time of the year (Our month of July is usually a month of FOG!) But we happened to get some nice weather Friday & the most of Saturday. So I made sure to capture some of those nice moments!! :P

Dad got a fire going and I made a smores...which, of course, I talked about in the last post! It was so good...man, they really make campfires all the more enjoyable, haha. I only made one though, I do tend to find them a little sweet. If it was any other time, I probably would have made 'some more' ... man I crack myself up, oh my.. lol

We were up shortly after 9am on Saturday morning; we took advantage of the sun that was shinning! It was such a nice thing to see...Dad wanted to put in the new window, so me and Mom helped him take out the real old one that was there since the cabin was built. The "new" one is a modern one just taken out of my nan's house. It looks much better now. And Mom had some new curtains made by a lady in town with some "cabin-y" matieral she picked out in Wal-Mart. Now the cabin is starting to look even nicer ^.^

The sun didn't last all day...*sigh*. Surprise, surprise. That's one thing we weren't, though, was surprised. We could see the fog hanging around outside the bay and it slowly made its way inward to engulf the whole bay and surrounding areas. Before it did, though, I chased a butterfly around so I could capture this symbol of summer!! We here on Newfoundland's coast know that summer weather is out there somewhere! Fog won't be here forever! :P

We got up early this morning, packed away our things, and left to come home again. And I finally got to witness the dolphins frolicking outside the bay!! It was awesome; but I had my camera packed away then because I didn't think I would use it on the ride back home. I wouldn't have gotten a good picture anyway. They were certainly jumping around a nice bit, though..we figure there was quite a bit of fish around, since there were many sea birds flying around near them. Especially puffins! My town's official bird (and mascot(!))..such a pretty bird.

Tomorrow I start back up at the pool again. I don't have another weekend off now till August 2nd. But me and Lucas switched up weekend because me, Mom & Dad and our friends Eunice & Wilf are heading to Gander for the Cobb's Pond Concert (Great Big Sea, Hey Rosetta!, etc) that weekend. On my scheduale I was supposed to have the previous weekend off, but me and Lucas switched to fix it up for me. I am excited for that weekend; it's going to be awesome! And this Wednesday coming, July 9, I will be excused from a day of work because I'm heading to Corner Brook for my bracessss! I am excited for that, too! I know, I know, I will probably be very uncomfortable at first and hate it, haha..but I know the after result will be great :) I am looking forward to going back to work again, though, and hopefully it will be sunny. The only way to enjoy working at an outdoor pool is if the weather is beautiful!!

I thaught I was going to test Lucy on Metal Camp, but due to some (unknown to me) reason I was told that I'm not on the list of accredited photographers. Few hours before I left... After I was told I was on the list... Never mind. Had some other things to do anyway... But a bit later I got the chance to test Lucy anyway, got accreditation for Riblja Čorba in Ankaran. The concert was great (a bit long maybe (3 bands and starting an hour late), at least for me, who had to drive across 1/2 a country to get back home :D) and I've learned (the hard way 'course) that mosquito repellent is important piece of equipment for concert photographer! :D

Stars Concert

Hey everyone I'm just posting to let you all know about the wonderful concert that Kyra and I went to last night. Stars was playing so we went to see that, and I admit, I like their music, but they're quite boring to see live! There was no energy in the crowd..I'm still waiting to see Priestess, Silverstein, Atreyu and Linkin Park play this coming week, its going to be massive!! Anyway, here are a couple photos of the Stars show to sink your teeth into! (BTW: these were all shot with the camera over my head, as the crowd was quite tall ^^ My Canon has no "live-view" LCD display, so i'm quite impressed with these. LOL)

Such a great news for you, guys! Next tuesday 10th july 08 we'll got the VJ: Crescent Jazz Big Band with a gorgeous jazz program. They 'll play in the main piazza of our village (piazza Vittorio Emanuele) at 9.30 pm.

i suggest you a "panino con il salame", a pint of fresh lager or a glass of wine and some great music there. The show is part of XII Edizione VJ Valdarno Jazz, organized by municipalities of the Valdarno area: Castelfranco di Sopra, Terranuova B.ni, Montevarchi, San Giovanni V.no, Bucine, Pian di Scò with the partnership of Associazione MoVingMusic & Associazione Musicale Valdarno Jazz.
