Bummer, this new Dell Latitude XT is showing some attitude. It looks like n-trig hardware is plugged into the hardware via USB interface and once you boot inside dock while other USB devices are connected the touchscreen wont load.

Read more about it here and here.

In Kubuntu 8.04 my laptop multimedia keys worked fine but in KDE 4.1.1 under Debian they didn’

In Kubuntu 8.04 my laptop multimedia keys worked fine but in KDE 4.1.1 under Debian they didn't, I couldn't assign them to actions in system preferences.

To solve it I've used xbindkeys, it works pretty nice and now I can control the volume with the volume keys. To do so, type:

#aptitude install xbindkeys xbindkeys-config

Now you can use xbindkeys-config to configure using a graphical interface or you can configure in ~/.xbindkeysrc.

To configure volume keys under kde 4.1.1 you will need to assign some actions to each key in order to increase, decrease or mute the volume, I've used qdbus and kmix to do that, for example, if you want to mute the audio:

$qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixer0 org.kde.KMix.toggleMute Master:0

So you need to assign that to the mute key. To increase the volume:

$qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixer0 org.kde.KMix.increaseVolume Master:0

And to decrease the volume:

$qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixer0 org.kde.KMix.decreaseVolume Master:0

So the xbindkeysrc file will be:

#Mute
"qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixer0 org.kde.KMix.toggleMute Master:0"
m:0x0 + c:160
NoSymbol

#SubirVol
"qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixer0 org.kde.KMix.increaseVolume Master:0"
m:0x0 + c:176
NoSymbol

#BajarVol
"qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixer0 org.kde.KMix.decreaseVolume Master:0"
m:0x0 + c:174
NoSymbol

After that you want to run xbindkeys daemon every time you login with your user, so add it to ~/.xinitrc, ~/.kde4/Autostart or any way you know to do so.

The Alien

[caption id="attachment_2394" align="alignright" width="87" caption="The Alien"][/caption]

A few of you may have been following my misadventures -- those involving the acquisition of my first new desktop computer in five years. I refer to the Alienware computer I originally ordered in late August to replace my dying, outdated Dell.

As Chapter II of this saga drew to a close, the Alien was on its way back to the factory for a little R&R (repair and rehab). Meantime, I assumed I would use my Dell. Wrong. The next day, it refused to start. For months it had been unreliable about starting, but for it to quit on me the day after the Alien left was particularly frustrating. And in support of the conspiracy theory that readers have suggested, it refused to start up again until -- surprise -- the day before the Alien got back from the factory.

Thoroughly rested and checked out by no less than the aliens themselves, and with several new parts, the Alien got back to me on October 1. I'm sure by now you can guess what happened next. DOA. It started up, immediately asked permission to restart because of some newly installed something-or-other. The new installs were not identified in any way, but my choices were "restart now" or "restart later," and I chose the former. Big mistake. It screwed up on the restart and stayed screwed up through two hours on the phone with tech support.

I thought I was being incredibly patient up to that point, given what had transpired in the preceding weeks, but when the tech had me pull the plug and told me to get a screwdriver in preparation for opening the case, I blew my top -- sort of. I told him no way, no how, I'd get back to him -- CLICK!!

This time my son, who probably knows more about computers than 90% of the aliens, agreed to come over, check things out, and initiate whatever calls and conversations might be necessary if he failed to fix the problem. He was finally able to get over here Saturday. Result: Son failed. Calls made Friday night, Monday morning, and this morning.

Long story short, the Alien left this afternoon on a final, one-way trip to the mothership. A totally new new machine is being built and will be shipped ASAP (a couple of weeks, probably). No, I'm not happy, but for the moment the Dell is still running and I don't plan to turn it off until the new machine arrives.

Stay tuned.

A standard-issue PC, left on all the time (a not-uncommon situation) consumes 746 kilowatts per hour

A standard-issue PC, left on all the time (a not-uncommon situation) consumes 746 kilowatts per hour a year, according to estimates from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. By comparison, a refrigerator uses about 500 kilowatts a year. Surely there are things that users can do to reduce their computer's environmental footprint.

After all, the object that, via the Internet, can provide you with more information on how to lead an environmentally sound life can also be one of the things that contributes to the very same problem.

Consider the following: A standard-issue PC, left on all the time (a not-uncommon situation) consumes 746 kilowatts per hour a year, according to estimates from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. By comparison, a refrigerator uses about 500 kilowatts a year. Surely there are things that users can do to reduce their computer's environmental footprint. Read on to learn ways to run your PC more efficiently, make environmentally intelligent purchasing decisions and to dispose of an old computer properly.

Power Corrupts

The first piece of advice is the simplest: Don't leave your computer on all the time. Shutting it down at night should reduce its power consumption by around 500 kilowatts annually. In addition, your computer should be set to go to sleep after periods of inactivity. Different parts of your system can be set to sleep at different times: Setting your energy -saving preferences to put your hard drive to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity is a good benchmark; your entire computer (which takes more time to wake up) should be set to go to sleep after 30 minutes.

And ditch your screensaver. Screensavers can use your hard drive to power up and photo screensavers require the extra use of a graphics card, which means you'll have the hard drive, graphics card and monitor all in use.

Screensavers are "a throwback from the days of really old-school CRT monitors," Barbara Grimes, spokeswoman for the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, said of cathode-ray tubes. "It's never been an energy-saving feature."

There's also the issue of "phantom" or "vampire" power: Just because your computer or laptop is shut down doesn't mean it's not using energy. Almost every piece of electronics uses power even when it is turned off. For example, your television turns on instantly because it is actually a little bit on already. In the case of your desktop, your computer stays in standby mode so it can keep data in its memory, its clock accurate and other functions. This means the average desktop PC wastes half its power.

To combat the vampires, take your computer (and peripherals) and plug it into a master power strip like the Smart Strip Power Strip, which can sense which devices have been turned off and then cuts all power to them.

Finally, download a free power-management tool. These applications will show you how much energy you can save by adjusting various settings and will make those adjustments for you in one click. Google's Energy Saver will, in addition, show you the collective energy savings of all users of the product; it also integrates into the Google's own Desktop application. Verdiem's Edison software, released in August, shows users estimated annual savings in terms of money, energy and carbon dioxide emissions. Edison's power management tool lets users choose how aggressive they want their energy savings to be by letting them slide the bar towards or away from the "save more" or "save less" tabs.

Out with the Old?

If you do decide to purchase a new computer, make sure that you choose both a computer and monitor that are Energy Star compliant. Energy Star computers must meet energy-use guidelines established by the environmental agency in three areas: standby, active and sleep modes.

The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, or Epeat, is another environmental certification that evaluates electronic products according to 51 environmental criteria. To qualify for Epeat registration, the product must meet all 51.

In general, laptops are greener than desktops because they have been designed with power sensitivity in mind, so they tend to use less power when plugged in than desktops. But desktops are easier to upgrade, and therefore may last longer.

Newer computers tend to be more energy-efficient than older models. For example, Energy Star-qualified computers starting from July 2007 come with power management pre-enabled.

As for whether Macs are greener than PCs? "It's system by system," said Grimes, the Climate Savers Computing Initiative spokeswoman. "Apple is one manufacturer and when you say PC, there are dozens. They're all using Intel processors or AMD processors. Apple is not using a proprietary processor anymore so they're getting a lot more similar at the hardware level."

One place where there is a difference is in how certain manufacturers' products are made. Apple, for example, has said it will "completely eliminate the use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in its products, and arsenic in the glass of flat-panel displays by the end of 2008." Unfortunately, that effort has not spread as quickly across the industry as some would like.

"I wish I could say that a lot of companies have eliminated their chemicals or had made some significant improvements, but that's just not where the industry is," said Barbara Kyle, national coordinator of the Electronics Take Back Coalition.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

When it comes to recycling your computer, picking the right program is key. If done right, recyclers should reuse the parts they can and manage waste responsibly, which means making sure that parts don't go to countries with poor eco-track records, like China, and that items that do get exported (like circuit boards and leaded glass) go to green-friendly sites.

In 2005, used or unwanted electronics amounted to about 1.9 million to 2.2 million tons of waste. Of that number, about 1.7 million tons were disposed of in landfills, and only 345,000 to 379,000 tons were recycled, according to the environmental agency.

The problem is that it's hard to figure out who's dumping and who's not. "There's no such certification program," said Kyle, which would help promote responsible recycling and green design in the electronics industry. Her organization, Computer Take Back, conducts initial screenings. Will people know 100 percent? No, but it's a start. For Computer Take Back's list of recyclers, go to tinyurl.com/5yrb9k.

Computer manufacturers like Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Sony offer recycling programs, but Dell goes even further: It will recycle any Dell brand product -- no matter when it was bought -- free (including pickup). Dell will also pick up other product brands for free if the consumer purchases a new Dell. Concerning manufacturer recycling programs, Kyle added that with a number of manufacturers, "you have to either pay them or you have to buy a new computer to get them to take your old PC back for free. There's a huge disconnect between what people want to do and what they can do, and that's where the manufacturers need to step up."

I had planned to write far more than I had been - and I definitely didn't want there to be large gaps of time in between posts - but so is life. But, as the title suggests, I am going to head back to the age-old question that us computer and digital media gurus always arrive at: Which is superior - Windows (PC) or Mac?

When I set out to find information regarding this issue, I was met with endless forums filled with bloated opinions (rarely ever backed up by fact), bizarre stories of computer experiences (on both sides), and blanket statements that are even less helpful: "My Mac always works and windows always crashes!" In my searching, I found this website which proved to be an interesting (and heavily one-sided) resource. I tend not to trust one-sided arguments; such things tend to never draw back and often miss the bigger picture.

So what does make the Mac better than the PC in the realm of Digital Media? Well according to popular opinion, it seems that the Mac comes ready to get you started on your digital journey with the pre-installed iLife Suite: iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, Garageband, Mail, and iCal which let you easily store and manipulate Photos, Music, Home Movies, Home Music, Email, and your Calendar (respectively). These are great and necessary items for any operating system . Windows Vista comes pre-packaged with a similar set, except they are simply integrated into the Operating System and not given a name: Windows Gallery, Windows Media Player, Windows Movie Maker, Sound Recorder, Windows Mail, and Windows Calendar. In the spirit of being completely fair, lets compare the two.

But really, to compare al of this software will take make for a big post. Very big. So please, stay updated on my next posts because I want to take an in-depth look at how each of these programs work (and don't work), and how they can hurt or help someone who's on the edge of getting into the field of Digital Media.

Intel's 8-month-old Atom computer processor – a product capable of reorienting the chip giant's business model – continues to sell above expectations, according to people inside and outside the company.

Atom was introduced in March with the hope it would power a new category of portable Internet devices – machines conveniently carried around yet always connected to the network. And while it was billed as the company's smallest processor, with a low energy diet, its shadow was potentially much larger.

The chip is a low cost product with a profit margin well under those of Intel's more traditional computer chips.

According to several outsiders, Atom demand is strong. "There's definitely a lot of interest in it," said Jim McGregor, research director at In-Stat. The interest appears to be coming not just from potential manufacturers of portable Internet devices, but from companies that intend to use it embedded in industrial machinery, defense products and aerospace equipment, he said.

The company should see some "design wins" for prospective products outside the consumer space in 2009 and 2010, he said.

Intel spokesman Bill Calder acknowledged that sales continue to be better than anticipated. The company said this spring that demand was strong.

"The momentum seems to be very good," Calder said. "We're please with the demand we are seeing."

Several OEMs have already released Atom-powered devices, including Dell and Acer.

I wish I could take credit for this term, but I have to give credit to Charlie Sykes for linking today's carbon-offset mania with the Reformation. Being a Lutheran, I was raised to know about the grounds for the reformation. I have to chuckle at the lengths we are willing to go to ease our guilt for living on this planet. I am in the process of replacing some windows so I save money and use less energy. I recycle more than the average person. I don't think we should destroy the planet just for the heck of it. I believe we should take reasonable steps to keep the planet clean for future generations.

What is a Carbon Offset Indulgence? It's hard to define, but I know one when I see it. Take the screenshot below. My dad needs a new PC, so I went to the Dell website to get some pricing. This screen allows one the choice to recycle their system for free. That's environmentally responsible. I think PC makers have been slow to find ways to take back and reuse the materials from old PCs for new ones. It's the bottom two choices that are interesting:

Support reforestation: Plant a tree for me [add $6]

Recycling Kit and Plant a Tree for Me [add $6]

So I am supposed to feel guilty for buying a PC and pay Dell an extra $6 to plant a tree? I didn't know so many trees died to make my plastic computer. Before you tell me that the reforestation is supposed to offset the gases created by the electricity my PC will use, I'll ask you how one $6 seedling will make a difference. My dad has 80 acres up north, and the forest plants seedlings all on its own. Maybe I should have my dad call Dell – they could give him a computer and pay him for planting all of those trees for them. I wonder how Dell feels about virtualization, which allows companies to be greener by using fewer physical servers.

“Every company has metrics that track performance. The key question is whether these metrics r

"Every company has metrics that track performance. The key question is whether these metrics really provide visibility to performance as viewed by the customer." Steve Matthesen

Inventory management is an aspect of business which needs to be given more attention than what it currently receives. It is certainly not the most glamorous aspects of running a business. Inventory management is a basic business building block like marketing, sales or finance. Simply put, inventory management deals with how efficiently an organization manages it stock cycles. Stocks in inventory, relate to aspects of business that are exposed to risk when accumulated beyond certain thresholds. In the case of a service business, it is the amount of outstanding payments. Efficient inventory management helps a business to maximize its existing assets by increasing turnover. Listed below are five steps to assist your business in managing inventory cycles better:

1. Inventory Velocity: This is an essential metric, which measures the speed at which a business can move it’s stock. The speed at which a business moves it’s inventory will impact substantially on its profitability and ROI. Inventory velocity can be calculated by simply dividing the cost of goods sold by the average inventory for the period. This is a benchmark all businesses should watch very closely. To learn more about the importance of measuring inventory velocity please click here.

2. Forecasting: Mistakes made by forecasting incorrectly will impact directly on the level of inventory at the end of a financial period. There are three important aspects to be considered when constructing forecasts. The forecasts need to be based on data acquired from the market, sales channels and the current pipeline. Based on these aspects, we can construct forecasts for multiple scenarios which enable us to put measures in place, for the best and worst case scenarios. It is important to remember that forecasts are only as good as the assumptions they are based upon. To learn more about how to forecast revenue for your business please click here.

3. Communication Channels: When there are insufficient channels of communication between the producer, distributor, retailer and customer inventory, management becomes challenging. The information gap needs to be bridged by implementing several communication channels which include, allocated representatives, conference calls, real time stock levels and feedback channels. When information is allowed to flow freely from the customer to the producer, changes can be made faster and everyone in the chain stands to benefit. To learn more about the various communication channels please click here.

4. Technology: Organizations such as Walmart and Dell have shown the power of technology to optimize inventory management. Today, entrepreneurs have access to several tools such as bar coding, inventory management and billing management software, which can help give small businesses an edge in managing their inventories optimally. To learn more about different types of technologies available for inventory management please click here.

5. Internal Policies: Policies and controls need to be selected carefully. Their main objective should be to facilitate bottom line growth for the business. These objectives act as guiding principles, and policies are intended to facilitate reaching those goals. Proper inventory management can impact bottom line figures and results for the business substantially. Policies pertaining to ordering, review and collections need to be mapped out in detail to ensure proper management of inventories. To learn more about internal policies relating to inventory management please click here.

Operations and supply chain management are the nuts and bolts of all businesses. Without smooth operations and proper controls, we could have a great website, killer marketing strategies and still come up short. When a customer does not get the product in time, or at the right price, we lose the customer. It all comes down to execution, and ensuring that we have systems in place to manage each order optimally. Inventory management is a critical aspect of this chain, and I recommend all business owners review their inventory cycles and work out ways to optimize them.

This is from a Dell 2950 III with one Xeon CPU (Quad Core Intel Xeon E5405, 2x6MB
Solution: Turns out, you must go to the system BIOS under the CPU section, and change Virtualization Technology from Disabled to Enabled since the factory setting is Disabled.

About a month ago, I finally got myself a Dell laptop. it's the Inspiron 1318. I wanted to get an Apple macbook, but realized the reason I loved my PowerBook G4 was the fact that it wasn't running windows. I know, that's a lame excuse. But honestly this Inspiron is a perfect match for my needs, I don't like bulky 15.4" laptops. I was a little tired of the tiny 12.1" I had, my work laptop is a 14.4" which is perfect, but I couldn't find a good 14.4" laptop. So I came across the Dell Inspiron.1318. It costs just $1000 less than a macbook, which is a little faster etc. but couldn't justify paying that much more. First thing after booting into windows Vista and getting all the HW info, was to install Open SuSe 11.0 Linux OS. So the drive is 250 GB, I left like 60GB for Vista, just in case, my dSLR requires it's windows software to updates it's bios :-( maybe one day they will make it platform independent. This is my journey with the Dell Inspiron and Linux..

My First OS insalltion went smooth. I ran into three major problems.

1. WiFi card not working
2. Sound not loud, but working
3. HD parking/unparking it self rather too often.. Read after it, and here you can read some more..

Other than those issues all working like a charm. Until today, I did not have the time, to work on things to make my laptop work smoothly, I will keep updating with latest information.

Black , 2.1 Ghz 800MHz, 320 GB, 4GB RAM, Wireless N, Backlit keyboard….Nice config..

Love it so far:)…..

By the way, from my experience with buying a laptop and returning 3..

Sony Laptops have only mail in service, which would take approximately 5-6 days if something went wrong..

Dell laptops purchased at Best Buy will not be covered by Dells warranty , well they do provide limited warranty, but if anything goes wrong you “have” to go to bestbuy’s geeksquad, and they will deal with dell, and an extension of the warranty can only be done with geek squad, basically you have no relationship with dell…so beware!!!!

.

Is Dell finally joining into the fight for the mini-laptop market ?
I certainly hope so.

From the report (Attachment #1), Dell is going to offer its mini-laptop around the price range of S$574 (US$400), this is certainly a very competitive offering.
Of cos, we'll still need to look at the specification of the product.

If Dell can also offer to customize its mini-laptop outer-casing design and color, it will really be an edge over other mini-laptop makers already in the market.

Let's hope they launch this product in this week.

Another black Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial (INDU) tanked this morning more than 800 points to levels not seen since 2004 (although it recovered to end up with a loss of “just” 370 points). Money market rates increase. People, companies and banks are hording cash. For the rainy day. Which is here. Growing stronger and stronger into a major storm.

The Dow Jones Industrial (INDU) has lost 30 percent since its market high. Not surprising, today's 1248 INDU predictions on PredictWallStreet show that people are pessimistic about the future. 55 percent of the users predict the market will further slip tomorrow. Looking at the sentiment trend, I see that users are more and more torn between one extreme and another. The one-month sentiment trend shows 5 occurrences of extremely positive and 4 extremely down investor sentiments not counting today’s extremely bearish sentiment. Nobody knows what is going on, where we are heading to. One day, there is hope. The next day, some nasty news crash it all.

How do you find any good investments in such a turbulent environment? There are several possibilities. One of them is to go short-term and play it day by day or week by week. This gives you a little more room to adjust to changing markets. You can use help from new financial web 2.0 sites. Faruk Jaffer, Chief Investment Officer of Index Gurus, just published an article comparing some of these sites in the article "The Modern Day Crystal Ball".

My stock picks for today: Up on Dell (DELL), Dow Jones Industrial (INDU), and Microsoft (MSFT). You can check on my predictions at http://www.predictwallstreet.com/account/mypws.aspx?user=celia728.

“Policies are many, Principles are few, Policies will change, Principles never do.” John C. Maxw

“Policies are many, Principles are few, Policies will change, Principles never do.” John C. Maxwell

A common answer I get when I ask individuals why they chose to become entrepreneurs is, "We did not want to get buried in bureaucracy and policies which stop us from performing optimally." I completely understand where they are coming from. It is true that in some larger organizations policies and controls become so complex that it leads to much frustration. However, I do not advocate running a business without any control measures. Policies and controls need to be selected carefully. Their main objective should be to facilitate bottom line growth for the business. These objectives act as guiding principles, and policies are intended to facilitate reaching those goals. Proper inventory management can impact bottom line figures and results for the business substantially, and is an area where entrepreneurs need control measures to ensure that things move smoothly. Listed below are a few policies which may be helpful:

1. Ordering: If your business depends on manufacturers to produce your product, it is best you have documented your specifications in detail. It is also advisable to get quotes from a number of manufacturers before deciding to go with a particular vendor. This not only helps gather market information, it enables you to get the best price as well.

2. Inventory Review: I recommend setting up a policy to review inventory stock levels periodically. This helps determine current worth, idle stock alternative strategies to be offloaded can be discussed, and it provides management with a holistic view of the level of risk they are currently exposed to. For a service based business, this can identify customers not paying on time, and adjust their credit lines accordingly.

3. Collections: This is an area where entrepreneurs face a lot of challenges. If you have outstanding payments for products sold through retailers or for services rendered, it is essential that a mechanism is in place to receive this payments as soon as possible. I would recommend setting up periodic reminders through, email, phone calls and personal visits to speed up this process. Depending on your business model, having a collection policy which is adhered to closely, can increase short term liquidity substantially.

Inventory management is definitely not the most exciting aspects of business. It is however, a critical function which needs to be given a lot more focus. Through appropriate policies and control measures, we can achieve optimal inventory velocity and increase the likelihood of turning in even greater profit.

Eccoci di nuovo qui ragazzi! Oggi recensirò La Mummia 3 La Tomba Dell’Imperatore Dragone. Partendo dal presupposto che non ho visto i precedenti film, la trama non si lega per niente con gli altri 2 film. Solo i personaggi son li stessi.
