(Agence Science-Presse) - Ir

- Rouge pour la planète profonde, qui nous affecte par ses mouvements (séismes, tsunamis, volcans) et nous fournit ses ressources non renouvelables. C'est le domaine de la géologie, de la géodynamique;

- Bleu pour l'océan et ses richesses, ses courants qui gouvernement les pêches; c'est le domaine de l'océanographie;

- Bleu clair pour l'atmosphère, avec les changements climatiques, la météo;

Here's the third part of my "different point of view" about Lucca, where I live (the first part is here, the second part is here )

This time I made a small slide show about pollution and rubbish, even in a nice town full of art and monuments.

This winter in Lucca the air quality was very bad, with a high level of PM10

Do you know what does PM10 mean?

PM10 is a mixture of materials that can include smoke, soot, dust, salts, acids, and metals. Particulate matter also forms when gases emitted from motor vehicles and industry undergoes chemical reactions in the atmosphere.

How air pollution affects the human body?
When you breathe in suspended particulate matter in it can attack and inflame your tissues all the way down the respiratory tract. Because these particles are so small, they can go deep inside your lungs and damage the smallest airways called bronchioles.
As the particles approach the cells lining the lungs, they are attacked by macrophages, part of the lungs' defense system. In turn, the macrophages trigger the release of inflammatory cells from the bone marrow. In some instances, toxic particles can destroy macrophages. Some particles make it all the way into the cells lining the lung, causing further inflammation that can hinder breathing.
Particles may also enter the bloodstream. Together with inflammatory mediators, they cause serious effects on the nervous system, as well as the heart and lungs.
Air pollution has the greatest effect on children, the elderly and those with respiratory and heart problems. Here is what air pollution can do to our health:

Increase and aggravate asthma

Create disease in the airways of children

Increase respiratory illness in children

Damage the lungs

Increase deaths from respiratory and cardiovascular disease

Increase hospital admissions for lung and heart disease

Cause chest pain and nausea

Cause shortness of breath and (faster) laboured breathing

Permanently change lung structure

Yesterday and today we were thinking/learning about Earthday 2008 at our school.

We are working on a mural to tell the story of the Earth and to coordinate with our literature unit called Our Earth. Yesterday, on Earth day students painted the beginning of a public mural. Something like this makes a lovely announcement of the day for a school to share.

Pairs of students worked to add painting and will be continuing to add to this all week. Wow, lots of talking communication, laughing. of course the sink broke so we really had a mess....mess. But it was fun.

View sarah_puglisi's map

Taken in a place with no name (See more photos or videos here)

Lots of thinking about the earth rotating around the sun, stars, space, the number of planets, our galaxy, space flights. It turns out that these issues are very interesting and as we are involved in our Exploring Time and Space year long project lots of things are being put together. Time, it's relationship to our rotation around the sun and the solar calendar as well as just working on reading the clock filled parts of the day.

So did celebrating life on earth, talking about ways to care for ourselves and our planet. We read the Lorax and we started reading poetry and talking about what poems are, how they work and what some really nice poems sound like. We shared 15 poems from this book:

The Earth Is Painted Green: A Garden of Poems About Our Planet

by Barbara Brenner (Editor), S. D. Schindler (Illustrator)

I've used it for years because the poetry is such a great selection of pieces celebrating the ways life is expressed as well as having positive messages about Earthcare.

It includes this poem, song that my children sang:

This Pretty Planet
This pretty planet, spinning through space
You're a garden, you're a harbor
You're a holy place

Golden sun going down
Gentle blue giant, spin us around

All through the night
Safe 'till the morning light

So there were many ways to take the vocabulary of the unit and extend it into our realtime projects.

In the afternoon students made chalk drawings. Today we made poems after talking about what a poem is. In some ways it's a definition that expands. Each student wrote from a frame and really did their own writing. Excellent poetry today, with lots of feeling about the earth.

Believe it or not, I am actually torn about Earthday. Here in the Midwest, it really doesn't seem to be a big deal, and it should be. Out on the west coast, I know for a fact that it is a big deal, and it should be. But, to repeat a cliché, Earthday should be every day. Every single day we should celebrate our planet. Every single day we should be using cloth bags when we shop, not only at the grocery store, but at the mall, at the pet store, any where that we make a purchase that will be coming home with us. Every single day we should consider purchasing handmade and local, every single day we should recycle, and think twice about unnecessary purchases.

I don't really believe in global warming, but I do believe in global killing. We have a stranglehold on this planet. We need to do our part to turn that around. I heard on a forum somewhere that some people don't think using cloth bags will make a difference. But if everyone used one cloth bag, used paper instead of plastic, we would have that many fewer plastic bags filling up landfills and floating in trash islands in middle of the ocean.

If I forget my cloth bags, and I frequently do, I will opt for paper. I know that we are "wasting" paper when we use the paper bags, but I use them as recycling containers in the kitchen. When they fill up, I take them out to the recycling bin in the garage. That way I am not always cleaning out a gross plastic bin, and they don't hold more than a couple of days of recyclables, so I don't have a weeks worth of trash in the kitchen (the dogs think old trash is a delicacy, so you can see where that would be a problem.)

I think Earthday is great, but we should try to focus on the issues that are putting our world in peril on a daily basis. Earthday isn't Christmas. We don't have a mythical Santa-type figure that only comes out once a year, we live in this world every single day, what we do will affect our tomorrow, whether or not we want to admit it.

So I rode my bike today, not in celebration of Earthday, but in celebration of life, and on celebration of the glorious weather we are having today. We are finally getting spring-like weather, and I will take advantage of it as much as possible.

Are you making any permanent changes in honor of Mother Earth, or are you doing something differently just to day, just to see how it feels? Or could you care less, because it won't be YOUR problem in 100 years?

Been up since 3 A.M. and now after my third cup of java and perusing the news I thought I would ramble on about things....I must admit I am disappointed in the low voter turnout [under 50%] and the loss by Barack Obama in the Pennsylvania primary election yesterday. Unfortunately, it confirms my view of Erie and the rest of PA in that for the most part they are conservative uninterested unmotivated narrow-minded people stuck in the past. If I had the means I would relocate to an area of the U.S. that is more in keeping with my attitudes and opinions....like Kansas or Texas or Indiana or even move out of the country to Canada. But alas, it looks like I am here for at least the short term so making the best of it. It will be interesting to see the Democratic primary process play out the rest of the way now. As a moderate Republican I still will be supporting Obama if he is the Democratic nominee for President. I find that I agree with his positions on healthcare, government reform, economic issues, and military issues more than the other candidates running this year. But enough about that....

Earth day. I spent the day outdoors raking, planting, picking up litter, romping with our new puppy, Cricket. It was a balmy 74 sunshiny degrees in Erie and you could not have asked for a more perfect day weather-wise!!! The birds are slowly but surely returning to their regular visits to our birdfeeders and bird bath. My pair of cardinals are back. Unfortunately, so is the skunk that visits in the night. UGH! But hey, live and let live-that's my motto. He serves a purpose in this world as well and who am I to grouse about his lumbering across my neighbour's yard? Its nice to see the reduction in the amount of car traffic on my street. A good byproduct of the sky high price of gas! Maybe we'll see more pedestrians and bicyclists around town now. I can't wait to begin planting the annuals. It is still too early here in northwest PA to plant them. I do not trust the weather gods to keep the night time temperatures warm enough to sustain them yet. I had to dig out the dead azaleas from my front yard garden and must decide what to plant in their place. Now that my front yard gets lots more sun [ a 100+ year old maple tree died and had to be removed last summer] I am not sure what will enjoy that area.

Well, oh my! Its after 5 a.m. I best go wake up my husband for work...
