I had decided to have the filming with me teaching done with primary 6 as they will still be at the school next year, they are more enthusiastic and better behaved and I got more parental permissions in!  When I had finished my explanation and the children got down to using glow I actually had to tell them that they were allowed to talk as they were trying so hard to be extra good that they were totally silent!

The lesson (I had got a bit of a fright when asked to do this, being the 3rd last day of term) I decided to do involved having a lesson plan on the noticeboard page of my Malawi glow group that the pupils had to follow involving documents and surveys.  I had them skim reading the first few pages of an information book I had saved on the documents page and then aswering questions on it on a survey.  They were then to go onto the discussions page and chat to talk about games that did not need any resources that I could do in Malawi.

Some of the pupils also got interviewed and I think they did quite well although I was not able to see as I had to stay in the class.

Afterwards I went to the advisory service to meet the other people coming out on secondment and to hear a bit more about what I will be doing next year.  I will be doing 2/3 days (I am hoping 3) a week on glow and the others on a curricular aspect of curriculum for excellence although there will be a lot of doing other bits and pieces.  As far as I could gather the glow and CforE aspects will also tie in together as a focus of the glow work is to be how to use it in learning and teaching. 

The only thing worrying me is the amount of food sitting in the office I will be in - apparently it is always like that.  I will need to work on my willpower!

I guess what this is leading to is this - pupils think learning should be fun. Mine tell me that when learning is fun, they are thinking about what they are doing. When a lesson isn't fun, they are thinking about when it's going to end. Certainly today, the bell crept up on us unnoticed, whereas quite often in classes the lack of concentration and fidgeting kicks in at least 10-15 minutes before the end !

But do teachers think lessons should be fun? I still hear a lot of the 'you're here to learn' and 'school's hard work - it's not meant to be fun'  type comments. Brian Boyd certainly thinks learning should be fun. Of course he wanted it to a part of ACfE...but was apparently told that to have done this would have been 'sending out the wrong message' so there's not the 5th capacity that he perhaps had in mind. Maybe using games is a way forward here. Kids prefer learning tasks which are fast, active, enquiry-based and which use multiple sources of information in parallel on which they can concentrate for short intensive bursts. Now, traditional school lessons may not meet these demands from today's digital learners and surely we have to adapt teaching to suit the learners? young people today are not the same as they were ten, fifteen, twenty years ago. It never ceases to amaze me how adaptable kids are, so should us teachers not also try to be adaptable and flexible in our approach to lesson planning?

Research shows that learning and recall improve when the learner is performing motor activities, when developing skills is set in familiar contexts and when it engages, motivates and inspires pupils. I have certainly found this to be the case when working with my classes on GLOW and we are developing the use of games to reinforce existing learning as well as to introduce new concepts, and they love working this way. It's a natural extension of our use of GLOW this year.

So....should learning be fun ? my pupils certainly think so - and the customer is usually right !!

However just as I was trying to persuade myself to sorting everything out we found out that Catherine from LINK had somehow, I really don't know how she did it, managed to get the airline to up our weight limit to 45kg each.  Of course as delighted as I was at this I did also have a niggle in the back of my mind about whether the planes would actually be alright with that much extra weight!  (I don't like flying that much!)

I do not want to fill up to that weight but at least it means I can take all of my clothes!

My only other worry about going away is that my wind up phone and ipod charger never arrived.  I then ordered another one yesterday, asking for next day delivery knowing that someone would be in the house today.  It has not arrived either and this is the item I most need so hope it comes tomorrow.

The whole thing feels a little unreal and I am not sure when it is going to hit me what I am doing.  Ironically I am so busy getting ready to go that I do not have the time to think about what it will actually be like out there.   I still have silly things to do like clear the camera and video camera, make up a photo album and update my ipod.  And get some money out!

Primary 7 have been busy clearing out the classroom and getting ready for their assembly.  I have been busy getting next years p.4-7 set up with their glow passwords, changing them and logging on and having a look around what has already been set up.  This has taken some time, most of which is to do with the initial passwords that the pupils have to change - I should not have done this with p.3 (!?) but the thought of doing them all myself seemed less preferable.

I have really got going with p.6 using glow, their teacher and I are used to working together and we have been swapping over classes so I can work with them.  Tomorrow LTS are coming to video us for a DVD for SLF and interview myself and the children.  So after telling them all to be in school uniform I need to go and decide what to wear myself and do my nails etc!  I have set up a lesson on my Malawi glow group so they have to follow instructions to read a document and then answer questions on it through a survey.  If they are still filming after that we can use the discussions and/or chat pages on that glow group.

I had a lovely time in p.4 on Friday setting them up with glow.  One boy, who can be difficult but whom I have a real soft spot for, was really interested and did everything asked of him.  When I passed by him he just came out with 'I love glow'.  Now he had only been on about 5-10 mins at this point and had not done very much on it but it was just one of those lovely moments and so I then spent 10-15 mins showing him how to put on web links and contacts onto his my glow page and then how to change the size of pictures and load them on his my glow page.  Something I have put on the web links page for the classes is the link to the LTS copyright free images so that they know where to find images they are allowed to use.  By spending time with this boy and showing him how to do things the rest could not do yet I hope he stays interested and maybe it will be something that will help keep him interested in other things at school too.  Far fetched maybe but nice to think of!

After my presentation I attended a couple of sessions led by Neil Melville which were excellent the first was about sharing analyser projects and the second was about using the measurement and data tools. You can learn more about using the measurement tools and data tables in this online tutorial. There are some more online tutorials on some of the other Dartfish features available here.

My second presentation was all about extending learning beyond the classroom through the use of online spaces and tools. I promised the delegates that they would not have to take any notes (other than the address of this blog) as I would write about my presentation and post links to everything I made reference to through the blog. I deliberately set out not to use a PowerPoint presentation as I wanted to demonstrate that you can deliver your content through other vehicles. I also wanted the delegates to return to my blog to experience for themselves what I was trying to get across i.e. you can extend the learning and the engagement with your learners beyond the restrictions of the actual lesson/presentation. By coming back to the blog the delegates have the opportunity to: read this post and reflect, click on the links to learn more and do further research or post comments to me thus extending the impact of the conference and this is exactly what our pupils doing in a number of schools. If you are a conference delegate welcome back if not read on anyway you might find something that engages you.

I was conscious that my workshop had a slant towards PE and not every delegate was from a PE or sports background, but all that I talked to could be replicated for any subject. I started by visiting the Learning and Teaching Scotland PE website and directed the group towards this case study about using blogs and wikis as there are links to videos and tutorials on how to set up a blog and information about wikis. 

I then introduced the wonderful free  web tool delicious to create online book marks for sites that you find interesting and useful it can then be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection. For a simple guide watch the video below (You probably will be unable to view the video in school as it is hosted on YouTube). You may find my PE bookmarks  useful. You may want to consider setting this up for your course or in a department to tag interesting sites or share frequently visited sites with pupils and or staff. This can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection.

I moved on to talk about Blogs for those of you who want to know a bit more about blogging I previously posted this video explaining blogging in simple terms . If you want to give blogging a go check out this set of tutorials for using wordpress the provider I use for this blog. If you look on the "links" section on the left hand side near the top of the page I have links to several PE blogs that you may find interesting.

The main point I was trying to establish is that blogs can provide a fantastic conduit for communication and collaboration with your learners. You can extend the learning beyond the confines of the lesson. Your learners can communicate with you leave you questions or work to look over etc and you can deal with these communications wherever you can get online. At this point I  spoke about RSS feeds and aggregators. You may find this video on using RSS feeds useful. The aggregator I demonstrated was netvibes a great bit of software to keep track of all blogs and websites that have content which is regularly updated. I find netvibes very useful as there are loads of plug ins that you can add and you can personalise it to your own needs and the best bit is that it is web based so if you sign up for your own account you can access it form any computer with an Internet connection. Ideal for use at home and school. Here is a video  about netvibes 

The next part of the presentation focused on wikis the following video (also on YouTube) will help you understand a little more about what a wiki is.

I used the Banchory H/Int2 wiki and explained that the content was there for people to download and use and share as long as they were willing to reciprocate and acknowledge the source. Yet again I was trying to demonstrate how we can use an online tool to extend the learning experience and provide additional support.  Wikis can also offer real scope for collaboration between teachers for resource development and between teachers and pupils for learning. I explained that teachers can sign up for free wikis that are advert free at wikispaces. Wikispaces also has video tutorials to help get you started within their help section.

When I was discussing the wikis I highlighted using Youtube to incorporate inspirational and interesting videos. There is actually a lot of very good content on Youtube and other video hosting sites such as google video. We use the videos as a hook for the pupils and also to make the wiki more attractive and lastly to engage the children though adopting a piece of their own culture. Our pupils are creating their own environments outside school with video, audio text and many other applications in sites such as bebo and myspace and facebook and we want our wiki to reflect some of that cool. I also demonstrated  Youtube annotation showing how value can be added to your you tube videos. This is the direction that Dartfish are moving through the Dartfish Moves platform where you can upload and annotate videos. I was gutted that I had to leave early and could not see the presentation on Datfish moves. Something else for you to check out is the Dartfish channel on YouTube.

I punctuated my first presentation in the morning with videos I had saved to my computer from YouTube using Zamzar. This is a very useful tool as most schools block video sharing sites or you may want to play a video on a laptop in an area with no access to an Internet connection. This article form Wired explains explains some other ways of saving videos to your computer. I like Zamzar as you can save videos to your computer in different formats and you can convert videos to different formats, it can also be used to convert many different types of files and documents from one type to another.

The install process was easy just like the previous versions, I was just using my full HD for this. The install was 15mins, and once it booted to the desktop I was ready to start getting the system back to the way I like. First came downloading the updates, there was 162 updates which took a total of 30mins to download and install. Now it was to get the Nvidia drivers, a mere 4mins and that was me back to using the Nvidia drivers for 3D FX and gaming.

Now it was time to install the software that I used, that wasnt included in the main install. This process again only took a total of 15mins and they were ready to use. I copied all my music and my files that I backed up before the format and after transfering over USB (30mins) that was me back to a fully working and setup the way I like it laptop.

At first glance you dont really see much difference in this version. which you want as you dont want a learning curve (like XP to Vista) to get in the way. Everything felt a lot more zippy, and looked cleaner.

The Bad -

1. As normal my webcam didn't work out the box, but add a line to the repo's and thats it working.

2. For some reason I had to find out how to enable my Nvidia drivers, normally an icon appears and I click "allow". I had to enable the desktop effects for that to pop up, not a big issue but not the best way to approch this.

3. Alsa & Pulseaudio - Since Pulseaudio was enabled by default, when i was using skype and then tried to play secondlife there was no sound in Secondlife and if i ran SL first then opened Skype i had no sound in that.  A quick sudo apt-get install esound fixed that, I feel that this should not have been added just yet...a waiting period where a good percentage of apps using Pulse as the main audio and then impliment this would have been better.

As you can see my bad points are very small and nothing major, so far I am very impressed with this release and look forward to features and versions to come.

Byron Report, Media coverage of games issues, and classroom use of Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training and Nintendogs all below...

Derek was busy with media interviews after the Byron Report - as noted in this Futurelab interview. As noted here previously, Derek says of the media coverage of the Byron Report:

"It was focusing on the negative – what's bad with games and not about how we can use them to good effect," he said. "It seemed like another excuse to roll out the old chestnuts about obesity, de-sensitisation of violence, and there doesn't seem to be any counter-balance.

In contrast, when talking to teachers about how games can become useful tools in the classroom to engage learners he notes:

"When I go to speak to teachers and the education community here in Scotland I very rarely get cynicism or resistance to working with games. Schools can't get enough of it up here. I think the reason it's been a success is that everything I do is packaged up for effective teaching and learning that can make sense in classrooms."

And his work on building up case-studies continues. The previous small study on the classroom use of Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training is being followed up by a larger scale study. Funding was available for equipment for 16 classrooms, and so 16 classes using Brain Training are taking part and data will also be collected from 16 matching classes without Brain Training.

Despite the evidence that this works, and despite the fact that this is just one classroom activity - not a replacement for teachers - the usual filtering effect occurs in mainstream media:

A Games Console as a Teacher? A dubious addition

The author doesn't appear to have paid too much attention to the details of the study:

In those days, it was the inspirational power of a teacher that could make or break your educational experience. Of course, there are are good teachers and not-so-good teachers, but I'm sure they would share a common disappointment if they were to be usurped by Dr Kawashima.

The obvious error here is that Brain Training was used in the trial for the sum total of 20 minutes a day - hardly replacing the teacher. What was also missed was the result that the weakest students in arithmetic no longer trailed way behind the rest of class after the trial. And the claim is made without asking teachers whether or not they would "share a common disappointment" to have Brain Training in the classroom. We'll know soon enough.

Another example on the Consolarium blog, on the use of Nintendogs in class, demonstrates how using console games in the class effectively in fact relies very strongly on the teacher planning and arranging a range of activities to leverage the engagement. In the Nintendogs example, the Primary 2 children wrote stories, made stop-motion animations, drew pictures, made wall displays, met a real-life dog warden, taught each other, read books about dogs, ...

1 Đĩa cài đặt

Đĩa cài đặt hiện có tại http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download.

2 Cài đặt

Đầu tiên chọn ngôn ngữ rồi gõ "Enter".

Chọn "Install Ubuntu" và gõ "Enter".

Trinh cài đặt đang boot.

Đây là thuật sĩ cài đặt sẽ hướng dẫn bạn xuyên suốt quá trình cài đặt. Chọn ngôn ngữ và click vào "Forward".

Chọn múi giờ gần nhất với vị trí của bạn và tiếp tục.

Chọn kiểu bàn phím và tiếp tục.

Chọn phân vùng trên đĩa cứng mà bạn muốn và tiếp tục.

Nếu bạn chọn phân vùng bằng tay trong cửa sổ trước đó, bạn sẽ thấy cửa sổ này. Ở đây bạn có thể tạo mới, chỉnh sửa hoặc xóa bỏ phân vùng và mount points.

Nhập dữ liệu yêu cầu cho tài khoản đầu tiên của bạn và tên cho máy tính vào trường dữ liệu.

Cửa sổ này chứa bản tóm tắt những lựa chọn của bạn. Nếu bạn muốn thay đổi phương thức cho màn hình lựa chọn khởi động click vào "Advanced" và thay đổi như bạn muốn. Click vào "Install" nếu bạn đồng ý với các lựa chọn.

Cài đặt thành công - gỡ bỏ đĩa cài đặt và vào "Restart now" để khởi động lai vào hệ thống mới.

Hệ thống đang khởi động. Nếu bạn muốn khởi động với nhân (kenel) khác, sửa thông số khởi động hay chạy một bài kiểm tra bộ nhớ, ấn "Esc". Hoặc đợi vài giây để khởi đông với những sắp đặt mặc định.

Hệ thống đang boot.

Sau đấy màn hình đăng nhập xuất hiện. Có vài lựa chọn khả dụng ở dưới góc trái. Đăng nhập với tên người dùng và mật khẩu mà bạn đã chọn trong quá trình cài đặt.

3 Cấu hình cơ bản

3.1 Nautilus

Đó là một ý tưởng tốt tới việc cho phép lệnh xóa bỏ qua thùng rác - bởi vì nếu bạn xóa một cái gì đó từ những lưu trữ bên ngoài với lệnh xóa chuẩn, nó sẽ không thực sự bị xóa mà bị chuyển tới thùng rác ở thiết bị (.trash). Thùng rác này sẽ không ảnh hưởng khi bạn xóa thùng rác trên desktop. Để thay đổi điều này mở thư mục bất kỳ và sửa thiết lập.

3.2 Font Rendering

Những thiết lập font chung khả dụng trong hệ thống thực đơn GNOME.

Chọn "Subpixel smoothing" nếu bạn đang sử dụng một màn hình LCD - click vào "Details" để thấy những lựa chọn hơn nữa.

Chỉnh độ phân giải là 96dpi.

3.3 Các dịch vụ

Một số đã khả dụng bởi mặc định trên hệ thống của bạn - có thể một trong số chúng thì không cần thiết (tùy thuộc trên phần cứng và nhu cầu của bạn). Việc vô hiệu hóa những dịch vụ không cần thiết này sẽ tiết kiệm tài nguyên hệ thống, như vậy nó đáng giá để xem xét thiết lập dịch vụ. 3.4 Chương trình khởi động

Những thiết lập cho chương trình khởi động khả dụng trên thực đơn hệ thống GNOME.

Nhìn thấy những chương trình khả dụng - vô hiệu hóa tất cả nếu bạn muốn. Ví dụ như bluetooth stuff - nó không cần thiết nếu bạn không có thiết bị bluetooth và bạn không cần sử dụng chương trình này.

3.5 Reduced Power Consumption

Với Powertop, một công cụ từ Intel cho nền Intel, bạn có thể tìm thấy phần mềm sử dụng nhiều năng lượng nhất hệ thống. Đặc biệt là người dùng notebook sẽ hưởng lợi từ reduced power consumption - nó sẽ kéo dài thời lượng pin.

Nếu bạn muốn sử dụng powertop, cài đặt gói sau:

• powertop

Chú thích: Cài đặt phần mềm được diễn tả ở bước 4.2.

Sau đó bạn có thể chạy powertop trong một terminal. Nó được khuyến cáo chạy với quyền root, trong trường hợp khác bạn không thể sử dụng tất cả những đặc tính của công cụ này.

Chạy powertop với quyền root:

sudo powertop

Powertop sẽ thường xuyên thu thập dữ liệu từ hệ thống. Trong những quãng nghỉ nó hiển thị cho bạn những cái sử dụng năng lượng nhiều nhất và trong thời gian đó làm thế nào để tối ưu hệ thống của bạn. Trong trường hợp xác nhận powertop có thể tối ưu hệ thống nếu bạn gõ một phím mà nó hiển thị.

Nó thì không chắc chắn làm tiết kiệm một vài watt.

3.6 Gỡ bỏ Phần mềm

Trước khi bạn cập nhật hệ thống lần đầu bạn nên kiểm tra nếu có những phần mềm đã cài đặt mà bạn không cần đến, hoặc đã được thay thế bởi một phần mềm khác. Mục đích là dọn dẹp hệ thống với chỉ những chương trình đã cài đặt mà bạn thực sự cần thiết.

Những chương trình nào mà bạn gỡ bỏ hoặc thay thế với cái khác là tùy vào bạn - bạn sẽ tìm thấy một bản tóm tắt những phần mềm đã cài ở bước 5 và một lượng nhỏ những phần mềm bổ sung (bao gồm cả thay thế cho phần mềm đã cài đặt) vào bước 6.

Bạn có thể gỡ bỏ phần mềm đơn giản với Synaptic Package Manager - tiếp tục với bước tiếp theo.

4 Synaptic Package Manager

Synaptic Package Manager là một chương trình dễ sử dụng để cài đặt và gỡ bỏ phần mềm từ những repositorie (kho phần mềm) sẵn có - hoặc chỉ kiểm tra những chương trình đã cài đặt. Có khoảng 24.000 Gói (Package) sẵn có trong những kho (repositorie) được thêm vào mặc định trong Ubuntu 8.04.

Synaptic Package Manager khả dụng trong thực đơn hệ thống GNOME.

Nhập mật khẩu.

Sau khi nhập mật khẩu Synaptic Package Manager xuất hiện.

4.1 Gỡ bỏ Gói (Uninstall Packages)

Để gỡ bỏ một hoặc nhiều hơn những gói chuyển trang thái nhìn và đánh dấu "Installed". Bây giờ bạn sẽ thấy tất cả những gói sẽ cài đặt trên hệ thống - bạn có thể duyệt chúng hoặc tìm kiếm một vài gói với chức năng tìm kiếm. Trong trường tìm kiếm bạn có thể nhập tên gói hoặc giới hạn tìm kiếm.

Nếu bạn tìm thấy một gói mà ban muốn gỡ bỏ, click vào ô kiểm xanh và chọn "Mark for Removal" hoặc "Mark for Complete Removal" từ thực đơn ngữ cảnh. Sự khác biệt giữa các lựa chọn cho việc gỡ bỏ, nó là việc gỡ bỏ hoàn toàn cũng sẽ xóa những tệp cấu hình trong khi việc gỡ bỏ thông thường không xóa bỏ chúng. Điều này có thể hữu dụng nếu bạn muốn giữ lại những cấu hình cho một gói (bạn có thể cài đặt nó lân nữa sau đó mà không cần phải cấu hình nó).

Sau đấy gói sẽ bị đánh dấu với một gạch chéo màu đỏ.

Để làm cho thay đổi có kết quả click vào "Apply" trong thanh thực đơn phía trên và sau đó xác nhận lựa chọn của bạn.

Bây giờ việc gỡ bỏ bắt đầu.

4.2 Cài đặt gói (Install Packages)

Để cài đặt một hoặc nhiều hơn những gói chuyển trạng thái nhìn và đánh dấu "Not installed". Bây giờ bạn sẽ thấy tất cả những gói chưa cài đặt trên hệ thống của bạn - bạn có thể duyệt chúng hoặc tìm kiếm một hoặc nhiều hơn những gói với chức năng tìm kiếm. Trong trường tìm kiếm bạn có thể nhập tên gói hoặc giới hạn tìm kiếm.

Nếu bạn tìm thấy một gói mà bạn muốn cài đặt, click vào ô kiểm trắng và chọn "Mark for Installation" từ thực đơn ngữ cảnh.

Những gói bạn muốn cài đặt thi thoảng sẽ có những phụ thuộc - sau đó một cửa sổ sẽ nhảy ra và bạn phải xác nhận rằng bạn muốn cài đặt những gói cần thiết thêm.

Sau đấy gói và những phụ thuộc được đánh dấu với một mủi tên màu vàng. Những phụ thuộc đã có được đánh dấu màu xanh.

Để làm cho những thay đổi có kết quả, click vào "Apply" trên thanh thực đơn phía trên và sau đó xác nhận lựa chọn của bạn.

Những gói đang được tải xuống...

...và sau đó cài đặt.

4.3 Cập nhật hệ thống (System Update)

Hệ thống sẽ kiểm tra cho việc cập nhật tự động và thông báo cho bạn nếu cập nhật khả dụng. Bạn có thể điều chỉnh quãng kiểm tra trong Synaptic Package Manager.

Hệ thống sẽ thông báo cho bạn nếu có cập nhật khả dụng. Click vào nút bấm màu cam để biết thêm chi tiết.

Trong trình quản lý cập nhật bạn có thể thấy thông tin chi tiết về những gói mới. Nếu bạn không muốn cái đặt một gói, bỏ đánh dấu hộp kiểm tương ứng. Để cài đặt cập nhật click vào "Install Updates".

Sau đấy cập nhật đang được tải xuống...

... và đã cài đặt.

Nếu hệ thống đã cập nhật (ví dụ một nhân Linux mới) bạn cần phải khởi động lại.

6 Phần mềm bổ sung

Tôi đưa ra cho bạn một danh sách nhỏ những phần mềm bổ sung để sự khó khăn của việc chọn lựa dễ dàng hơn với bạn. Tôi không khuyến cáo cài đặt tất cả những phần mềm này - không có điểm trong việc cài đặt ba ứng dụng chơi audio vân vân... Đừng quên việc gỡ bỏ một phần mềm đã cài nếu bạn sẽ cài thay thế.

Cài đặt hoặc gỡ bỏ phần mềm được giảng giải ở bước 4.

6.1 Medibuntu

Vài gói giống như Adobe Reader không sẵn có trong repositories (kho) chuẩn. Cách dễ nhất để làm những gói tương đương khả dụng với hệ thống của bạn là thêm medibuntu repository. Nếu bạn muốn thêm repository này mở một terminal ...

... nhập repository ...

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

... nhập gpg-key và cập nhật danh sách gói.

6.2 Khuyến cáo

6.2.1 Microsoft's TrueType Core Fonts

Vài font, bao gồm Arial, Times New Roman và Verdana là ví dụ.

Nếu bạn muốn sử dụng những font đó, cài đặt gói sau:

Bạn sẽ thấy cửa sổ này trong khi cài đặt. Click vào "Forward".

6.2.2 W32codecs & những thứ khác

Codec cần thiết để chơi MS stuff và vài định dạng video khác.

6.2.3 Adobe Reader

Sau khi việc cài đặt kết thúc Adobe Reader khả dụng trong thực đơn ứng dụng GNOME.

Click vào "Edit" trong thực đơn trên cùng và chọn "Preferences".

Chọn 96dpi như là độ phân giải và lưu lại thiết lập.

6.2.4 Adobe Flash Player

Adobe Flash Player cho phép trình duyệt của bạn chơi những nội dung Flash được nhúng vào.

Gói Sun's JAVA được thêm sự hỗ trợ đầy đủ Java cho hệ thống của bạn.

6.2.6 Công cụ cấu hình NTFS (NTFS Configuration Tool)

6.4.1 Unrar

Với gói này bạn sẽ có thể giải nén những file rar. Nếu bạn muốn sử dụng unrar, cài đặt gói sau:

6.4.2 Ứng dụng Lưu lượng Kết nối (Network Traffic Applet)

Với applet này bạn có thể theo dõi tốc độ của những thiết bị kết nối.

Nếu bạn muốn sử dụng network traffic applet, cài đặt gói sau:

• netspeed

Sau đó thêm applet này vào gnome-panel. Chuột phải vào panel, chọn "Add to panel" và chọn applet.

6.4.3 Filezilla

Filezilla là một công cụ FTP với nhiều đặc tính - hỗ trợ FTP, FTPS, FTPES và SFTP.

6.4.13 VMware Server

Với VMware Server bạn có thể cài đặt một hệ điều hành khách như Windows, Linux, NetWare hay Solaris.

Nếu bạn muốn sử dụng VMware Server, cài đặt những gói sau đây:

• xinetd
• build-essential

Sau đó mở http://www.vmware.com/download/server/ trong trình duyệt của bạn. Tải xuống phiên bản mới nhất (.tar.gz) và đăng ký đê lấy một serial number.

Bây giờ mở một terminal, chuyển tới thư mục nơi bạn tải xuống VMware Server, và giải nén nó. Sau đó chuyển tới tệp tin vừa giải nén và bắt đầu trình cài đặt.

cd vmware-server-distrib/
sudo ./vmware-install.pl

Bạn sẽ được hỏi một vài câu hỏi về gói cài đặt. - đơn giản gõ enter cho mọi câu hỏi - với những loại trừ câu hỏi nếu bạn muốn trình cài đặt chạy vmware-config.pl sau khi cài đặt.

Bây giờ download patch này. Sau đó mở terminal và chuyển tới thư mục nơi bạn download patch. Giải nén patch và sao chép bao gồm .tar-files tới thư mục VMware module-sources.

tar xvfj vmware.tar.bz2
cd vmware/
sudo cp vm* /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/

Bây giờ gõ:

sudo vmware-config.pl

Trả lời tất cả những câu hỏi với "yes" và tán thành license agreement (nếu bạn tán thành nó). Sau đó bạn sẽ được hỏi vài câu hỏi về cài đặt gói. - đơn gỉan gõ enter cho mọi câu hỏi. Cuối cùng bạn nhập serial number của bạn.

Như một phương sách chúng ta phải thay thế một thư viện - trong trường hợp khác VMware Server sẽ không khởi động:

sudo ln -sf /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1

The VMware Server bây giờ khả dụng trong thực đơn ứng dụng gnome.

Vamos ao que interessa então, há algum tempo venho escrevendo um artigo de como montar um servidor de páginas usando ferramentas como, Ubuntu Server, quero aproveitar mudar algumas coisas, estava escrevendo com o 7.10 mas agora estou mudando para outra versão mas recente, quero montar usando a versão Hardy, dois motivos serviram para ser tomada esta decisão. Primeiro é uma receita de bolo para montar servidores confiáveis, uma vez que ele é LTS, ou seja um grande período de suporte e patchs de segurança. Também vou utilizar a OpenJDK, uma reclamação antiga de alguns leitores, vou buscar mostrar mais configurações no Apache Geron imo.

Outro possível artigo será a montagem de um ambiente de desenvolvimento de aplicativos, vou procurar montar um ambiente completo, desde o gerenciamento com Trac e Subversion, ambiente de programação e base de dados.

Estas são algumas novidades que pretendo publicar. Nos próximos dias estarei postando mais alguns artigos!!!

Despues de instalar la nueva version de Ubuntu se estaran preguntando que hacer?

Les hace falta poder escuchar MP3, ver DVDs, instalar Flash,  Java para Azureus y Frostwire por ejemplo.

Que tenemos que hacer?

Instalar Ubuntu Restricted Extras.

Se van a > Aplicaciones > Añadir/Eliminar seleccionan buscar en todas las aplicaciones disponibles yluego ahi en el campo de busqueda escriben "Restricted extras"

Lo marcan para instalar y listo!

Van a bajar como 50MB mas o menos pero ahi esta casi todo lo necesario para hacer despues de una instalacion, hay que recordar que por cuestiones de copyright y legales no se pueden incluir de serie en el Sistema Operativo pero esta es la forma mas facil de hacerlo.

Que sigue despues? Pues ha instalar el soporte para poder descomprimir archivos como .rar o .zip. pero eso lo voy a dejar para otro post.

When finished, you’ll have a new option under System - Preferences called Advanced Desktop Effects. Here you can tweak the animations for individual window effects as well as enable new features. Below are some of the animations and effects that I have enabled for my Linux box.

Dicho esto, he de decir que llevo 3 días (desde la publicación de la Release Candidate) probando la nueva versión y la verdad esque ha mejorado en bastantes aspectos, ¿Lo más notable? No sé, todo un poquito, mayor rendimiento, una nueva herramienta para probar el Hardware que se encuentra en Sistema -> Administración -> Pruebas de Hardware (System -> Administration -> Hardware Testing), la cuál veo bastante interesante a decir verdad, porque así podemos comprobar que todo funciona como deseamos.

Dicho esto, teneis tres opciones, la ya conocida descarga directa de Ubuntu, pedirlo por ShipIt que tarda unas semanas o bien comprar un DVD con Ubuntu y contribuir con el proyecto. Recordaros que LTS significa Long Time Support

Aunque yo no utilizo Kubuntu ayer, echando un vistazo por la web, pude ver que han liberado dos versiones de Hardy Heron, una con KDE 3 y otra con KDE 4 que han llamado Remix.

E' stata ufficialmente rilasciata la versione definitiva di Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron (Airone Audace) LTS, quella che potremo definire come la distribuzione linux più utilizzata (e pure di moda) su ambienti desktop.
Tra le tante novità inserite in questa versione si segnalano la presenza di Gnome 2.22, Firefox 3 beta 5 ed OpenOffice 2.4.
Inoltre attraverso il software integrato Wubi sarà possibile installare Ubuntu direttamente dentro Windows ed utilizzarlo nella stessa partizione.
Piccola nota, l'acronimo LTS sta per Long Term Support in quanto questa versione verrà supportata fino al 2011.

สำหรับฟีเจอร์ใหม่ ๆ ใน Ubuntu 8.04 ก็เช่น Gnome 2.22 ที่ปรับปรุงส่วนต่าง ๆ ให้ดีขึ้น (ก็แหงล่ะ) เคอร์เนลใหม่ ๆ ที่ย่อมรู้จักฮาร์แวร์มากขึ้น มี Policy Kit ไว้จัดการเรื่องความปลอดภัยในส่วนของการเชื่อมต่อเครือข่าย Pulse Audio ไว้ควบคุมเสียงที่ออกมาจากแต่ละ Application (ในวิสต้าก็มีนะ) Firefox ก็ให้เวอร์ชั่น 3 beta 5 มาให้ อันที่จริงมันก็สมบูรณ์แล้วนะ ยกเว้นว่า Extension ยังไม่รองรับทั้งหมดก็เท่านั้นล่ะ (แต่ตัวหลัก ๆ มันก็ใช้ได้แล้ว) Brasero ใช้เขียนแผ่น CD / DVD ก็จะได้ไม่ต้องใช้ K3B กันอีกต่อไป (แต่ K3B มันก็ยังหลากหลายกว่าอยู่ดีแหละ) นาฬิกา ก็บอกเวลาได้ทั่วโลก (วิสต้าก็บอกได้นะ) และนอกจากนี้ก็ยังมีฟีเจอร์อื่น ๆ อีกเยอะแยะที่เพิ่มเติมมา หรือทำของเดิมให้ฉลาดขึ้น อันนี้ก็ต้องลองไปใช้กันเอง

สำหรับ Umenu & Wubi ตอนนี้ผมยังไม่ได้ลองกับตัวเต็มที่เพิ่งดาวน์โหลดมาครับว่าใช้ได้สมบูรณ์ไหม (ตั้งแต่ A5 - RC ยังไม่สามารถใช้ Wubi ติดตั้ง Ubuntu สำเร็จซักที) ก็ยังงงอยู่ว่า ที่เวบของ Wubi มันยังไม่ Support เวอร์ชั่น 8.04 เลย แล้วพี่แกจะรีบยัดมาทำไมให้มีความหวัง (เมื่อวานเอาไฟล์ iso ที่ดาวน์โหลดมา ไร้ท์ลงแผ่นแล้ว แต่เข้า Umenu ไม่ได้ สงสัยจะเป็นที่การไร้ท์แผ่นไม่สมบูรณ์แหงม ๆ เพราะว่าเช็ค MD5 ไฟล์ iso แล้วมันถูกหง่า เฮ้อ..กรรมบัง)

ไว้ผมได้ติดตั้งไปแล้ว ผลเป็นยังไง ใช้งานง่ายขึ้นไหม อันนี้จะมาบอกอีกที (เด๋วก็จะเพี้ยนหนักจนลบวินโดวส์ทิ้งไปอีก เฮ้อ..)
