I am on vacation next week, so will not be blogging! Of course, since I will not be here, there are no classes planned for next week, but the week after we will have our very first Picasa class (Tuesday, October 21 at 10:00 am) and also the first of 2 Excel classes (Thursday, October 23 at 10:00 am) this month.

The Facebook class this month was so popular that we are planning another in December. We are also planning a class on Craigslist during November. So keep checking back for the new class schedule...should be out when I get back!

Maybe I'll post a photo of the fall leaves...

Dear Blogger's,

I am one of the newest members on the blog network, was hearing that its a powerful source of information which we can get from experiences of people. Hope to learn a lot from such kind of blog sites.....

I would be updating all the new things which i find to help organize urself through ur personal computer( Idiot box which my wife calls it). Please add on to it if you find something interesting

To start of on my first blog would recommend people to install Picasa 3 in order to organize all your photo and make collages in order to put all your loved photos at one place. Benefits of Picasa .

Arranges all the pics on chronological order of clicking the photo.

Adding easy caption to all the photos and placing labels to all the folders to make a memorable note,

Easy help to upload the photo on Web Picasa so that easy to share with your friends and family.

Make a movie of the photos and adding music to it.

Making basic fixes like Changing background, cropping the picture or fine tuning and not to forget red eye remover to help to remove the red Dracula like eyes of a lot of brown eyed people.

While writing this blog was installing Google chrome.... would update you on it in my next blog. Would like if people can add to some features which i have missed.

You’d think that with the Dodgers sweeping the Phillies so early that I’d have more time

You'd think that with the Dodgers sweeping the Phillies so early that I'd have more time to do blog posts. I'm still not sure where the last three days have gone, but I do have a few links for you.

DesktopLinux.com: Google rev's photo editor for Linux. Google's Picasa, their image editing and sharing program, has gotten even better with the beta release of version 3.0. Not only is there better integration with web albums, a new collage tool, and an auto-red-eye removal, but one of the best things is the speed of loading. It used to be a case of click the launcher and go get a cup of coffee while it loads, but when I first launched Picasa after getting it upgrade it quickly showed the splash screen and asked about migrating my old settings. While there is a repository for Linux users to help you get updated more quickly you'll want to add their test repo to get Picasa 3's beta.

Julian Saraceni: Appnr, searching and finding Ubuntu apps. I don't usually post things I see on the Ubuntu Weblogs, simply to limit how many duplicate postings they get, but Julian has a great way to find packages without remembering what the heck they're called. It doesn't require a sign-up or installing software no included in Ubuntu's repos to use Appnr, either.

Davif Tutcher: Veza - An Opensource TinyURL Replacement (Aplha One). I love TinyURL, especially how easy it is to get a URI that doesn't telegraph what the link goes to, but it's not exactly open source. But there's a new way coming down the pike that is 100% open source. Veza turns long URIs into not just short URIs but ones that are pretty easy to remember. I look forward to when there's a bookmarklet that grabs the long URI and starts the process like there is for TinyURL, but that's just a matter of time. (Yes, that post is kind of old, but I wanted to check it out more before I blogged it, and then I forgot to change the flag on it in Evolution so it would come up in my list of things to blog. Sorry 'bout that.)

I have news of an update to a favored program, but there's a slight glitch in one file. The bug was reported and resolved, but until it makes the PPA archive so we can easily grab it I'm going to make you wait to see which app it is. Trust me, it will be worth the wait.

In the meantime, I trust at least some of you will be catching game one of the NLCS tonight. I plan on obeying a wallpaper I made for at least the next week or so.

Picasa 3 is a worthy update that any picasa user may try out. I am not going into a detailed feature review. But I am going to touch on a few things that everyone should watch out for when the final edition comes out.

Picasa Photo Viewer: This was the only option that picasa lagged. And now it has arrived. You can configure picasa to open files and browse through them all you want. The ribbon like picture sifter at the bottom of the screen is pretty handy. But few things are still required. First, a setting for controlling the zoom level in the picture viewing window. I have some photos which look miniscule on my 20 inch. I need them to appear at a certain level of zoom everytime I open them. ACDSee had such an option and it made all the difference. Secondly, I need some control over the slideshow mode. The options setting from the picture viewer doesn't let you do much. At least a timer control would be nice. But I loved the keyboard and mouse based zoom in zoom out and also faded and transparent background that shows the desktop while you are viewing a smaller photo. Oh, you can upload from the photo viewer as long as you are logged into the web album. Loved that part, makes photo upload a piece of cake.

Videos: Ever tried making videos from you photos? Quite a cumbersome task if all you want is to just put a track at the back and some captions at the bottom. Take it from someone who has used quite a lot of video editing options, Picasa3 is the best option for you to make videos out of your pics. The effects are pretty simple, and there are not a bunch of options for editing and text effects. But for making a simpe slideshow, video with a music track, customized timing, and text caption, Picasa3 is by far the best software out there. Best of all? You can directly upload to Youtube from the software

Collages: Now there is a lot more control over the collages you create. The previous pathatic click-and-hope-everything-turns-out-the-best approach is gone. Now you can rotate, change, mix and match and do a bunch of things to the picture pile you just created. Have fun with your background people. That's what my collages are usually for :)

GeoTag: Does exactly what it says. Couple it with Google Earth and you can place your photos on the exact spot that they were taken.

Other things to look out for are the options to make posters, posting to blog and many other teeny tiny improvements. The overall sorting and shuffling and archiving and other functions are better. The whole interface contains little tweaks that make the experience a lot better. Try it out, you'll see.

Some experimental features are also on this beta. And some of those should make it to the end product. And the one I want most is

Find Duplicates: I have millions of duplicates of my photos and I really need something to sort them out. The experimental feature doesn't show all duplicates side by side, but that should not be a problem to fix. To the guys and gals at Picasa, "Please make this work right."

Another killer feature would be the ability to export all your photos to a single place. Sort of like the iTunes music folder organizer option. There might be something already in Picasa for this, but in case there isn't, "Could you please make this happen as well."

You can download Picasa 3 beta from here

Google has released Picasa 3 into beta on September 2, but for those of you who haven't heard of Picasa then let me give you a little history lesson. Picasa is a program that manages and edits your photos and videos. Picasa was created by Idelab at first, but it wasn't too famous, but then in 2004 that was when Picasa sky rocketed because google acquired Picasa and released it as a free download. Picasa is a nice program and is mostly used for manging your photos and videos, it also has a light built in editor. Picasa is also quite famous for its cool features such as you could make online photo albums, colleagues, blog about a picture at blogger, and backup your photo and video library. One of the more famous features in Picasa is it's ability to back up your library, I personally love Picasa's back up system because it's easy to use and hassle free. If you really want to use Picasa to its full extent then I would probably recommend Picasa 2 since Picasa 3 has some bugs since it's in beta. But then again what isn't in Beta from Google.

If you are a Linux user and have been wanting to run Google's photo organizing and editing software Picasa on that OS, your wait is now over. Google has released a
Linux port of the software based on its latest available version. The software reportedly utilizes portions of Wine to function, so it wouldn't be accurate to call it an actual “port”. As a result, there are a few features missing in this release due to Picasa relying on certain Windows components.

Picasa 3 Beta is also available for Windows now, which is no surprise, but not for the Mac. We wonder if this is some sort of trend setting at Google, let's remember that the company's month-old Chrome browser remains at large a Windows-only application.

wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | apt-key add - apt-get update

Öpnna sedan filen med mjukvarukällorna:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Och lägg till denna rad:

deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ stable non-free

Spara och stäng filen, uppdatera sedan dina förråd och du är klar:

sudo apt-get update

Jag kan även passa på att tipsa om betaversionen av Picasa 3 som innehåller en massa gott och blandat, mer info hittar du här.

According to wikipwdia, Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to

According to wikipwdia, Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media such as photographs, video, websites, or RSS feeds and is a form of geospatial metadata. This data usually consists of latitude and longitude coordinates, though it can also include altitude, bearing, accuracy data, and place names.

Regarding photos, we are basically talking about adding coordinates (latitude and longitude) to the metadata of the images, so you can track back the location where the picture as taken.

Many uses can arise from this information. For me, being able to pinpoint my memories or being able to go back to a certain interesting theme are the main ones. Of course, when you start making money out of photography, being able to setup a shooting location from your past work is also an important feature...

OK, so by now it should be clear that Geotag is geographic metadata added to each photo. The probable next questions are: How do I do it? What do I need for that?

Lets take one question at a time.

How do I do it?

There are several approaches for this. Some require user intervention and some don't. Its all on the equipment you already have and how much you are willing to spend. In my case (as I'm trying to get the D300 :) I'm willing to spend as little as possible on this, but I'll get to it in the third part of this topic). So lets go through the most common ways:

Your machine includes a GPS

Well, this is the simplest way. Your pictures are already being geotagged. Try looking at its properties. If you can't find the information, take a look at the camera's manual to check if there is some setup left to be done.

I have a photo specific GPS

Usually these units already have a process that allows the GPS information to be written to the EXIF data of your photos. Some are connected to your camera through a cable. Others connect through BlueToth and last but not least, there are those that require post processing through a software that link the pictures with the GPS tracking data. How is this achieved? Well, to start with, you have to synchronize the camera's clock with the GPS. Te GPS stores tracking information (a collection of pinpoints with time-line) and in post processing, the software looks at the time a picture was taken and matches the location from the tracking data at that precise time. Quite simple and lovely decoupled process, wouldn't you say?? :D

There are still some units that have a card reader/writter and into which you insert your card with the photos. The unit will edit the photos adding the geographical data. An example of these units can be found here.

Examples of disconnected GPS units:

Sony GPS tracker for photographers

ATP GPS Photo Finder

I have a GPS and a a camera that don't fit together in any way (that's my case)

Well, this is basically similar to the previous case, where a post processing is required to do the trick. You just have to check:

that your GPS cant keep record of your track and how large that track can be (check the references)

that you can extract that track from the GPS

From then on, you just have to use a geotaggingsoftware (if you want to automate the process) or some EXIF editing software if you want to do it by hand.

I don't have a GPS, can I geotag?

The answer is: certainly! :)

There are a couple of tools available, mainly related to the freely available map engines (Microsoft Virtual Earthanf Google Earth).

For MS Virtual Earth, you can use the free Microsoft Pro Photo Tools (I describe them in this post).

For Google Earth, you can use Flickr or Picasa.

On the next post (Geotag: The tools and the equipments) I will try to focus on tool details and current available selection. Stay tuned.

This post is part of a series of posts regarding the full Geotag Scenario. You can find the index on the top post: Geotag.
