Uno de los juegos más vendidos del pasado curso en Japón fue Monster Hunter Portable 2G para PSP, una mejora sobre el segundo juego de la serie. Tras ese enorme éxito, el título alcanzará otros territorios entre ellos el europeo según se ha desvelado en la feria del Tokio Game Show 2008.

Incluso ha sido desvelado el título que ocupará la cubierta: Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Si uno se para a mirar las escalofriantes cifras que trae el juego, no saldrá de su asombro porque al menos el dinero estará bien invertido. Más de 400 misiones, más de 2,000 elementos para la armadura, más de 1,500 armas, que dan lugar a ¡¡más de 500 horas de juego!!

In our final section we will be looking into the comics and how they have added to the SH series.

The SH comics have been running for quite a few years now and although they do not sit canon with the stories from the games, they do add more insight into the thoughts of the minds that get trapped in SH.

At this point in time we have seen quite a few stories, we have: -

4. Paint It Black
5. The Grinning Man
6. Dead/Alive
7. Hunger
8. Sinner's Reward

The original comic was an unreleased graphic novel that never saw the light of day, thankfully the same fate did not befit Dying Inside and we got our first look at a new take on SH.

I am not going to go into too much detail on each comic, if you want that then go HERE to wikipedia.  What I am going to talk about is why I love them and why I believe they are worthy additions to the series.

Each comic has it's own artist, this means we never get the same images twice, while some characters do return in different stories the different take on the style can make it feel fresh every time.  Much like the comics for Konami's other great series Metal Gear Solid, what we see from the game can be drastically different when shown through the medium that is the comic book.

Each story takes us into the twisted town for a look at the characters that have been drawn to it and while some find a home in SH others are forced to face what they truly are. This same premise is also apparent throughout the games, each character has there own demons and this small town mearly shows them the truth behind their masks.

Each of the comics has appeared as either a short series i.e 5 comics one story, or as a stand alone book, this is true apart from one story and that one is THE HUNGER.  As discussed in part 2 of this retrospective the PSP got the UMD known as "The Silent Hill Experience" and it is on this disc that this comic appears, in fact it is the only place it appears, meaning that if you are after the whole set then you really should have brought this disc.  Like the MGS comic on UMD, THE HUNGER got the animated treatment featuring voices and sound affects to assist in the watching of the tale.  The whole story actually took about 40 minutes to watch and is quite an experience I must say (it was my first look at animated comics), it really helped to drive the story to the viewer.

Animated comics like SH, MGS and Dead Space, really drive home the background behind a game, they alow you to take a look at unseen chapters and really get a feel for what the developers where trying to convey to their audience and boy do I love it.

Like so many others SH has a great story, but it also has a great amount of media to drive that story and I can only hope that everyone who see's this series no matter the media will get a different experience from it, SH will talk to us all in different ways and can really get into the viewers mind and that is it's greatest charm.

So if you read this I hope you have enjoyed it, I really love this series and I hope you all will too, so to part as always this has been an Elbobo-hoff production later.

Sony has announced that all future first-party PSP games will be available through download in Japan, beginning later this year via the Wi-Fi Store. The store is scheduled to open in Japan on October 15th with the firmware v5.00 update. Games to be sold by direct download include Secret Agent Clank (11/20), Patapon 2 (11/27), and LocoRoco 2 (12/4) (these titles will also be available on UMD). There is currently no date for the release of the store in North America or Europe. We're also wondering how downloadable games' pricing will compare to standard UMD retail prices (considering that direct downloads save on packaging, shipping and a slew of other costs). We'll update as soon as we hear anything.

In part 2 we will be discusing the movie, music and experience that is Silent Hill.

The idea of a movie based off a computer game is a scary one, with nothing but the shattered remains of Uwe Boll fueling this niche market we held our heads in fear as the nightmare announcement came through.  Our pain was short lived however and for once Uwe had been told to screw off (and shoot himself in the face or something), in his place we had Christopher Gans and unlike Uwe he actually played the Silent Hill games before having the idea for the movie.

Gans decided to not just a straight retelling of one of the games, instead he decided to create a fusion of the first 4, he had the opening story from SH1, the monsters from SH2, the female lead of 3 and good dose of twistedness from 4.  Whilst this might sound like a bit of a mish-mash of ideas they created a story that I believe actually stood proudly on it's own.

What surprised me about this movie was the lack of big names, yes we had Sean Bean but he played such a minor role, the real stars were the women in the film, every one of the actresses shined with some amazing acting and they truely brought this series to the screen with a bang.

Adding to the great acting was a great bringing to life of the creatures from SH, Pyramid Head has never looked real and so so brutal.  It was not just Pyaramid Head either, all of the creatures in the film screamed quality with a few new ones adding to an already great cast.

So the movie didn't suck as we thought it would, but accompanying it was of course the musical score of SH sound god Akira Yamaoka.

Akira Yamaoka has been with the series since it's conception, he has added his own level of fear to the games and it has all ben done through his music.

Each game in the SH series has boasted a slightly different soundtrack, but each one has envolked the feelings of both the characters and the town.  Each game has had it's own main theme's and Akira's music reflects these themes.  In SH1 we had a very simple yet creepy song played on the mandolin, SH2 gave us a mixture of guitar and piano that made us feel as much sorrow as the main character.  SH3 changed it's theme direction instead we got a theme that felt much more powerful and we were also introduced to the vocals of one "Mary Elizabeth McGlynn", her vocals added a new level of fear to the franchise and that same feeling crossed over to SH4 and also to SH5 (see below for the new SH5 theme "one more soul to the call).

The music for this series should be praised and although I am not goin into too much detail here I will just say play the games turn the lights off and let this beautiful mix of media draw you into the horror that is Silent Hill.

Since we are the idea of mixing media I feel that it is now the time to talk about a small UMD for the PSP, a UMD under the name of "The Silent Hill Experience"

This small UMD was released to coincide with the movie and it was designed to give people a better look at the franchise.  Unfortunatly due to the UMD nature of this medium it never really sold and mostly fell into obscurity (finding a copy when it came out was hell).  Those who did get there hands on it found one of the best compilations of the series.

Whilst not a game it was interactive and offered secrets to those who dug deep enough into the disc.  We got exclusive movie interviews, an entire back catalogue of music from the series, a comic remade for UMD and finally an exclusive comic avaliable only on this medium.

As I have already stated I am going to discuss the comics in the next part of this retrospective (I feel they deserve there own part), what I do want to say is that if you are a fan of the series or if you are someone who wanted to just understand the series a bit more then this UMD would have answered most of your questions.  It gave all who looked upon it a taster of the horror that is SH and for us devoted fans it filled a gap whilst we waited for the next game.

The UMD is one of the best dance crews out there that popularized dancing along with the likes of the Streetboys. Gotta give it up to these two crews. I'm not exagerrating when I say this but I think they have solidified their place in the Dance/Hip-Hop Industry in the Philippines. Aunque sólo hayan llegado hasta nosotros 2 temporadas de la serie GX que pasaron sin pena ni gloria, Yu-Gi-Oh! es seguido por infinidad de fans de los juegos de cartas y del anime e incluso nos tenemos que conformar con ver en versión original subtitulada el resto de temporadas e incluso la nueva serie titulada 5 D's.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 3 volverá a nuestras PSP en el mes de noviembre y nos permitirá enfrentarnos, entre otros, a los personajes de las temporadas 3 y 4. Además bate record de cartas disponibles al concentrar nada más y nada menos que más de 3,500 cartas. A esto hay que unir el contenido descargable y los duelos Tag con un compañero a dobles, señas de identidad de la franquicia.

As sort of a little birthday gift to myself I picked up a movie I have wanted to get for quite some time and on a new format I had never previously experienced: Sony's UMD.

While this review isn't so much about the movie itself (although I will say Daniel Craig is a great Bond and the new 007 film coming later in '08 looks fanastic - think Batman Begins reboot of the Bond series) I did think it was important to talk about the UMD format and whether it's worth your time and money to invest in.

Now as many people, sites and publications have said since its introduction in 2005, PSP UMD movies are hard to be thought of as "great values" when they cost nearly the same as their DVD counterparts and can only be played on the PSP. It also doesn't help that most films lack special features that DVDs have and aren't even at the same resolution as DVDs (The PSP just isn't capable of true SDTV NTSC visuals).

However, even with that said, the picture quality is outstanding (the compression is super high quality) and it's really cool to be watching a full-length movie in your hands on a tiny device. Of course, the UMD is always spinning for data to be read so obviously the battery is drained faster than it is in most games but the spinning disc itself is perfectly quiet. I'd also recommend using headphones with movies since the built-in PSP speakers seem quieter for films (it may just be Casino Royale...not sure).

Anyways, I think UMDs are still good investments as an alternative to DVDs and many can be found for cheap on eBay and in most tech stores. If you have a particular film or show you want to watch on the go, the UMD discs may be what you want but most people won't probably see a need for UMD movies. I also realize falling prices on memory sticks may have killed the UMD format early but there's something very n3rdy/cool about watching official, full-length movies on your PSP.

The movies will also eventually be great collector's items and like I said, if you don't want to load up memory sticks with ripped movies/TV shows these discs are pretty snazzy if they can be found inexpensively. The UMD concept is something no other portable has ever done and you can't help but think how much value was packed into such a small device.

Nuevas animaciones y un realismo más acentuado, una experiencia de juego más ajustada y equilibrada, FIFA 09 aspira a convertirse un año más como el simulador futbolístico de la temporada para todas las consolas.

Bueno otra cosa, que en realidad no es noticia, pero si es, un "nuevo" PSP, que lo unico nuevo que tiene es algunos detalliyos cosmeticos, microfono integrado y una mejor pantalla, fuera de eso todo jala igual, solo para que supieran.

El próximo mes de noviembre está prevista la emisión en cines de todo el mundo de la sexta película ya, a falta de una supuestamente doble sesión final de la séptima parte, de Harry Potter. Como es de recibo, a cada película le acompaña desde sus inicios el juego para las consolas, que desde el pasado año comenzamos a disfrutar para la nueva generación con mejores gráficos y nuevas posibilidades.

Tras un par de juegos donde el Quidditch quedaba relegado a un segundo plano o ni siquiera aparecía, esta sexta parte saca partido de nuevo al deporte mágico y a los vuelos con escoba. Volveremos también a disfrutar de los famosos duelos de varitas e incluso podremos crear pociones mágicas además de revivir los momentos más apasionantes de la película.

Poor younger sister. The one I blogged about yesterday, the only one I have, has been in a funk since she and her boyfriend broke up. They were in love once, she said. She's in such a bad mood that she's wearing her Maryland sweatshirt: something you may not notice, but I pick up on because I have to hear about how much she *hates* College Park every time she goes down there (or someone mentions going down there, or thinks about going down there, or says a word in praise of one of Maryland's teams, etc). UMD is where I'm attempting to get my bachelors degree, so she's been down there a few times. Never any fun. The worst thing about said funk is that PLS (read: poor little sister) doesn't even think she's in a funk. Sometime between last night and this morning, she decided it's normal to have a key lime pie breakfast (sinful for the insulin resistant) and then to climb back into bed and listen to TJ McCloud. TJ McCloud?! It's sickening. The music all sounds the same, sappy "Wop wop wop I love youuuuuuu my dear wop wop" which goes into the ears like maple syrup from the container to the throat.

Though I'm still on a Wilco binge, I have this burning desire to share a non-Wilco song with the public. It's "Nothing But The Water, Part I" by Grace Potter and The Nocturnals, performed at this year's All Good Festival. Other very exciting news in my life: An artist whom I saw paint at All Good Festival 2008 and absolutely adore just returned my e-mail! His name is Vort, and you can see some of his work at his website, degivisuals.com/nucleus. I had the privilege of meeting him outside of The Bridge/Mike Gordon show in Manhattan last week, and after some botched communication-"You tape? Like, for archive.org?" "No. I paint. Like, with my hands."-I was able to figure out who he was. He did this great painting at a Bassnectar show a little while ago, which I definitely think you should check out on his website. Basically, he sells one painting every day for $50 to the first person who bids on it. Cool thing, right? Check out his website, he has some awesome works up.
